Heading to US on mon. Are people very uptight about bfing? I just whip 'em out here, can't think who HASN'T seen my boobs, but not sure how it will be taken over there. Yr experience? in malls, restaurants etc?

I visit family in California and have done it in public. People (women) tend to carry blankets and use them as a throw thing.

Never had any issues myself on the East Coast - malls, shops, airports, churches, restaurants etc

Didn't do anything with blankets or see anyone else using them either

Maybe in Cali it's to stop sunburn?

Probably depends where exactly in the US? Bit like here- might not go down well with bigots on the Isle of Mann (though I'm sure there are lots of non-bigots who would applaud too) but wouldn't really raise an eyebrow in a cosmopolitan city centre museum cafe.

You shouldn't have a problem. I have breastfed in all sorts of places in the US and never had a problem. I think a lot of mothers perceive there to be a problem so they have all sorts of tent contraptions and nursing tops - but really, you don't need anything like that. Just lift up your shirt and let the baby hide everything.

I currently live in the USA, I've had 4 children here and as the PP said, it's getting better. You will probably feel more comfortable though if you have a light blanket or something to throw over yourself while breastfeeding (which is almost always referred to here as "nursing" - for some reason they just do not seem to like saying the word "breast", shock horror eh?)

CarmenSanDiego · 31/03/2009 18:34

depends where you are. I live in California and you have a legal right to breastfeed anywhere. I had one security guard look at me funny in a mall but generally nobody bats an eyelid. If you're visiting the south, you /may/ find people a bit funny about it but generally in cities you should be fine.

oops just noticed this is an old thread. Guess she's been and gone now!

I didn't have any problems BFIP when I lived in Ohio. I BF in restaurants, malls, etc.

A few raised eyebrows at tandem nursing, but I suppose that is reasonable enough.

Don't buy yourself a tent contraption - BF and be proud!

lol, just noticed my earlier post - at least I didn't contradict myself!
