Australia: what can my GP prescribe, or what can I buy, to help me/us sleep on the flight?

DH, the children (11 and 14) and I are off to Australia (flying economy with Singapore Airlines) at Easter for the first time and I am dreading the flight. We do fly frequently but have never attempted anything longer than 11 or 12 hours. I find it impossible to sleep on planes and I am wondering what I can buy or beg from my GP to help me/us sleep.

What have you found that helps you pass out sleep on a longhaul flight?

We are heading to Brisbane with SQ at Easter too. We used to get temazepam prescribed for the flight pre-DD, which gave DH and me a few hours zonked. But since having DD (now 9) we have endured it each year without the drugs. I don't think a GP will give you anything for the kids I'm afraid. I suppose one parent could take something on each leg, leaving one adult in charge?

a couple of glasses of red wine usually does it for me
and i never drink any coffee/tea before the flight

Syndol is usually quite good for zonking

I find Phenergan works for me (tablet form) but not for my daughter.

We tried Phenergan and Valergan in liquid form - no joy - she does fall asleep but doesn't stay asleep and wakes up grumpy.

But then she's much younger (3.5).

Zopiclone is BRILLIANT
