Emigrating to Australia with a 12mo! Help!

Hi we are planning to emigrate to Australia soon. Does anyone have any experience/ advice about travelling long haul with a baby? I assume I wont need to sterilise anything as by the time we go she'll be a year. Can you put car seats on the plane with a stroller free of charge? Any tips for the flight? And if anyone else is emigrating too I'd love to hear from you

Hi Hootie, we left the UK for Oz 2yrs ago on dd1's first birthday.

Travelling with her was fine, be careful about the times of your flights, ie don't do what I did and get the 10pm flight hoping that she will sleep. I would go for a midday or 6pm flight. Book a bassinette if she'll still fit in it - check the airline website. The stroller can go on the plane - get them to put it on when you get to board the plane, not in with the other luggage, then it will be ready for you at Singapore/KL when you change planes. Check whether your car seat is legal in in Australia, we just left our old one in the UK and bought new in Oz as there are different rules.

You could also try posting this in the Living Overseas section, you may get more response. Also there have been other threads about emigrating - you may pick up some useful tips.

Good luck anyway where are you going?

Hi Sorry for the delayed reply!

We're hopefully going to NSW, somewhere north of Sydney ideally. This really depends on whereabouts I can get a job - I'm a retail pharmacist.

Whereabouts do you live? We've been out to Oz a couple of times before but only really done the east coast - friends in Sydney, Byron & Noosa.

Where your family supportive about you going? We've been telling our parents we intend to emigrate for about three years (!) but now they have a grandaughter it's a very different story...!

Thanks for your advice about car seats and flight times, we thought she might sleep on a night flight too, but we'll probably just all get tired and ratty if we do that!

Hope to hear from you soon
