Seemed like a good idea - now beginning to panic !!!

Have booked to go to the Dominican Republic next month with DH and DS (8 months). I spent ages looking into where to go and was confident he would be fine on the flight and the reviews of the hotel are generally very good.
However, now we are getting closer and people are saying "Dominican with a baby, are you mad??!!!" am now starting to doubt that it was such a good plan.....
Have I made a big mistake? How have other people got on with this?

Ignore other people. They are probably jealous. Go and have a great time.

Thanks for replying, I was really looking forward to it but I suppose I am now feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the practical issues which we obviously never had to deal with before & other people looking at me like im crazy is not helping much.

I'm right with you Lou. I'll be heading off to the West Indies with my 5 month old and my teenage sister for Easter. DH will come out a week later and we'll all go back together. Am terrified!!! Heard a good tip on MN about meals- order a vegetarian meal for one of you, it'll come first so one person can hold the baby while the other eats- then the rest of the meals come and you can swap. And make up little 'change parcels' (nappy plus wipes plus change of clothes if needed) so you don't have to lug the whole changing bag/wrestle with it in the tiny airplane loo. And obv get a bulkhead seat and baby bassinet/sky cot.

Good luck to both of us nutters!!

Oh and apparently feed during take off and landing to pop their ears!

It's be fine.
We have flown a lot (some longhaul) with our daughter since she was 4 months old.
It's dead easy. The cabin crew will do what they can to help you. There are two of you and one child so you can help each other, and since your son is 8 months you can feed him snacks/milk until he passes out.

Actually, the smaller they are the easier it is since they are happier to just sit and feed etc, and they are easily portable.

If your child likes watching telly, we have always found that Pingu and a portable DVD player can be a lifesaver with a daytime flight.

We are flying with Thomson so no skycot unfortunately he is on our lap for the 8/9 hours, am hoping he will just crash out for most of it. Just having visions of him trying to swipe the food from whoever has the misfortune blessing of sitting next to us.

You'll be fine. Just did my third trip to Australia with DS 2years 3 months (first at 4 months then 12 months), this time with DD 7months. On the way back was alone with both.
Have friends who've travelled India, Tanzania, Argentina, Ecuador, Mexico all with babies under 18 months. All been fine and had great fun. You'll be fine and have a ball. MrsHappy's right - the smaller the easier.
Also - MamcitaGordita - you shouldn't have to order a special meal, just say as you board that you'd like one meal earlier or one meal kept warm til later. In fact, most airlines will do this automatically so one can eat while the other's holding the baby.
I am extremely jealous! Have a brilliant time.

Good to hear Shylily- although I am travelling with some dodgy less well known airlines so they may need reminding! And really I know I'm worrying unnecessarily- my mum went all over the place with 3 of us as tiddlers on her own and is quite baffled by my hesitancy!
