Vaccinations for Sri Lanka

Hello,

Dh and I are taking our 16 month ds to Sri Lanka for two weeks at the end of March and will be staying with friends on the south coast. I've been advised to have the following vaccinations: Typhoid, Hep A and Tetanus (ds is up to date with his tetanus).

Can anyone give me an idea of how ds might react to these vaccinations? Are we likely to be in for a couple of weeks with an irritable and slightly ill child?

Any other recommendations, advice, suggestions re anything about Sri Lanka most welcome.

Many thanks.

Hi,
I was told that the typhoid vaccine is ineffective before they are 18 months old? But maybe check with a specialist travel clinic - they are probably more up to date than a GP. Hep A vacc. is OK, but typhoid can be pretty nasty if you're unlucky. I had an unpleasant reaction that lasted a couple of days.

I went to Sri Lanka a couple of years ago - it's truly beautiful. If you're staying in the beach/tourist areas in the south (Galle, Bentota, Beruwala) then it really is very modern and clean, so you should be fine on the hygiene front.

It's such a small country and really easy to get around - it's worth the trips up country if you have the inclination. But the beaches are gorgeous in the South, and there are some great days trips to Galle and Colombo for example. We were there for 3 weeks, so let me know if you want any info. I'll see what I can remember!

This is the travel health advice for Sri Lanka.

We didn't used to give typhoid to under 2s, as it has a suboptimal effect. You just have to be particularly vigilant about food and water hygiene.

Many thanks you guys. Sorry for my delayed response, I haven't been online for a couple of days.
