Honeymoon destinations

The OH and I are getting married later this year, just a small and fairly cheap do. We would however like to have a honeymoon.

I have never been anywhere exotic and infact my travel history is only short breaks to Spain, Italy, Poland and Amsterdam! I like Cities and getting out and about to look at things but can get bored of that after a few days.

My OH has been to Spain and Amsterdam and also to more exotic places (Malasia I think?!).

We're thinking we might just go for it and book one of those two week all inclusive beachy type holidays but need to know how acheivable this is on a budget and also where are the best places to go (we're thinking Cuba could be a good option?).

General questions are:

How much do you recon we'd be looking at for 2 weeks away?

Where's good to go?

Are there any companies out there you'd recommend, specially ones we could pay gradually through the year?

Depends really on your budget as you can get some really good value all inclusive holidays in the caribbean for less than the price of a similar holiday to Spain. The best value is undoubtably the Dominican republic (I have been 7 times)but you'll also get good deals in Cuba and Mexico.

I would say look at Eclipse Direct (the direct selling arm of first choice) for the best prices. I have stayed at and would be happy to reccomend the following hotels in the Dom Rep:-

Iberostar Costa Dorado
Riu Merengue/Riu Mambu/Riu Batchata
Gran Ventana
Iberostar Dominicana

I would say you should be able to get any of these for less than £1000 pp for two weeks.

I Cuba we stayed at the Paradisus Rio De Oro which was beautiful, although more expensive. I have heard rave reviews about the Playa Pesquero so you could look at that also.

I would say those that both Cuba and the Dom Rep are beach destination which not much to do outside of your hotel especially in Cuba except if you were to add in a 2 day stay in Havana.

When are you looking at going as depending on whether it is hurricane season whould effect where i would go. I wouldn't go to Cuba and would stick to the North coast of the Dom Rep which rarely gets touched by storms - they tend to hit the east of the Island and die out over land. The riskiest months are September/October but before and after those months you should be fine.

Thanks QueenFee - I don't do beach holidays either so was thinking Cuba might be a good mix as I could do the hanging about on the beach/at the resort thing but then we could also go to Havana.

And thank you so much for these recommendations Hersetta.

we're getting married in July so we'd be Honeymooning probably in August.

Other thoughts are:

Taj Mahal/sights of India for 1 week/1 week in Goa.

Sri Lanka tour (Kandy/tea plantations/big rock place/elephant sanctuary)/beach resort.

Eqypt (pyramids etc/Sharmel Sheik)

Cruise! Egypt and Aegean

I am deliberating a similar thing at the moment, can you tell?

moondog · 21/01/2009 14:02

Sri Lanka is fab.
You don;t need to do an organised tour.Plan it yoursel. That's half the fun!

anyone know any companies which allow you to pay in instalments?
