Eating out in New York on a budget

Dh and I are going to New York for a few days soon. We are trying to work out the budget and have found a fantastic website called 'menupages' that lists thousands of menus of all prices and varieties. One of the things I read in a NY guide was that the portions were huge so it was a good idea to order one starter and one main course between two people. Is that an acceptable thing to do? I wouldn't do it in England!

We never did, but one of my sister's always does it when she goes to the US.

You can eat pretty cheaply in NY anyway.

Have fun.

That's helpful, thank you. Looking at the menus online, it all looks really good value. I think we'll save the embarrasment, order a meal each, and just loosen our belts!

We once ordered one starter between 5 of us (all adults)!! . It was in Tony Romas and it was their onion loaf - there was plenty for all of us. However, we did all order a separate main course.
