China with 2yr old and (hopefully!) pregnant

I'd be grateful for any advice from people who've been to China with toddlers/whist pregnant.

DH has been invited to do some work in Beijing late summer/early autumn. The company who've invited him will pay for his flights and our hotel rooms so it'd be a cheap way of having a holiday in China. Essentially the idea seems to be that he'd work with them for a week or so but mainly in the mornings and then we'd have a week to travel around. DD would be around 2 and we've just started to TTC DC2 so there's a possibility (hopefully a probability!) that I'd be pregnant but I don't know what stage. Would I be mad to do this? We travelled round China for a month pre-DD (when DH had a similar job so I was alone for some of it) and whilst I enjoyed that it does make me wary BUT I'm torn between that and not wanting to miss out on a potentially very exciting holiday. I suppose the main things I'm worrying about are:

  1. Food. DD and I are veggie so food in China is a major hassle anyway but trying to find safe food that is veggie and she'll eat worries me.
  1. Hygiene - no idea if she'll be potty trained then but as I remember the public loos were beyond vile
  1. Medical treatment if anything went wrong in pg (if relevant)
  1. I'll be going around alone with DD whilst DH at work. Was fine doing that last time but keeping hold of her alone is more worrying.
  1. DD and I are blonde... last time the attention was nice to an extent in that I got to meet people but it could get a bit much....

Sorry that's very long but would appreciate any thoughts as I'm torn between feeling negative and feeling that if I don't go I will have become really boring!

Thanks in advance!

We did this when dd was 14 mths old and I was 2 mths pg (to Shanghai). I lost weight as it was so difficult to work out what to eat and I admit I was so hungry we went to MacDonalds a couple of times. Dd got loads of attention which I didn't mind too much but dh got annoyed at so many strangers touching her. I must admit it was hard work as Shanghai wasn't really cut out to drag a child around and the jet lag after the flight back nearly killed me (no sleep on the plane with dd and then the time difference with a toddler)

Many thanks Mrs Fogi. That's pretty much how I thought it might be - perhaps a little too stressful for the benefits (esp given that I've been before and DD will be too young to appreciate it). Though if DH is really keen from a work perspective it and he's keen it might be worth it

We went to Hong Kong last year when I was 16 weeks pg. It was fab.

We didnt eat much Chinease food though and stuck to what we knew ie TGI Fridays etc. I was very ill from flying and jet lag and had to keep eating.

I didnt have the jabs as I was pg and my gp said I didnt need them.

The public loos in Hong Kong were very clean (the ones at Beijing airport were also clean)

We didnt get a massive amount of attention at all and dp is a red head. The only thing that we did get was odd looks - We had shorts and t shirts on in December and they all had coats, scarves and hats on. It was 26 degrees!! Beijing was very cold though!

I would go. I loved it in Hong Kong and want to take dd when she is older, currently 7mo. The people were friendly and we felt very safe.
