Help with central heating. What does this do???

Hello,
I wonder if anyone can help me.
In my airing cupboard is a red box with "paddle position indicator" on it and a switch with "auto" and "manual" on it.

What does it all mean and should the switch point to auto or manual???

Our central heating went off a while ago (about a month ) and I moved the switch a bit and it got going again. It has now packed up (I think the pump is broken) and I'm worred I have buggered it up by moving the switch.

I cant remember where it was pointing to begin with but it was nearer the auto end when it all went wrong yesterday.

Any ideas, I haven'y a clue (can you tell?)

I would GUESS that manual means its on permanently and auto means its on a timer. Other than that, can't really suggest anything... have you got a model number, you could try googling for a manual for it?
