Travelling to Mauritius

I am due to travel to Mauritius in a couple of weeks with my 10 month old dd. I am planning to take powdered milk with me and am assuming i can simply add to boiled water. I have heard though that water out there is desalinated and so may not be suitable for a baby's milk. Does anyone know about this or have expereince of travelling there with a young baby?
Also, any general tips would be gratefully receieved - am starting to wonder if the trip is a good idea...

Hi tired mum. I'm also off to Mauritius in a couple of weeks so will watch this with interest.

on the milk front, I believe the advice is to boil water or used bottled water. I assume your dd is still on formula? will she take the liquid forms in cartons? (ds took formula but hated the ready made stuff)

on whether the trip is a good idea, yes definitely! a bit of winter sun is great. granted I'm not looking forward to the 11 hour flight (just me and 20 mo ds) but am sure it will be worth it.

We took DS to Portugal when he was 7 mths old, and used bottled water, boiled, for bottles. You need to check the level of sodium (Na I think) in the bottled water, as it varies hugely between brands.

We also went to to Mauritius pre-DS (once to get married, the second time booked pre-pregnancy but travelled 3 months pregnant!) - my top tip would be to locate the nearest small supermarket to the hotel/resort, and take a taxi out to stock up on water, Coke and rum - the Green Island rum is fab, and FAR cheaper than in the hotels.

Finally, brace yourself for the transfer to your hotel at the other end - some hotels are easy to get to, others, like Sugar Beach and le Paradis where we went, are mainly reached via the coastal roads (or were a few years back), and the journey is a REAL pain after a long flight. Well worth it when you get there though - enjoy!

Hi tiredmum2, we went to mauritius last year, and the one thing you definately caannot drink is their water. Better to boil or buy bottled. There are plenty of large supermarkets there, so there should be no problem buying food or drink. There is a huge one in an area called Grand Baie which is in the north of the island. The supermarket is very much like our Asda's.

Overall it is a great place to go, very friendly, tropical, the food is great and the weather is very hot this time of year so take plenty of suncream. But i'm sure you'll have a lovely time.
