Hi, I´m off to Paris for the weekend and need recommendations. What is a good arrondissement? Is anything good nr the Gare du Nord?

No - seedy. Depends what you want really and definitely what your budget is. Eg lots of classy (and expensive) hotels off Champs Elysses. Some funky hotels hotels on the Left Bank. Same round Montmartre. Are you going for sightseeing, romance, shopping, or Parisian atmosphere?

Oh, lucky you. I lived in Paris for 4 years before dcs and would LOVE a weekend there with just dh.

Gare du Nord area, as with those around most big stations in large citiies, is pretty scummy. Depends on your budget and what you're likely to be doing which arrondissement you'd be best with. If you want to save your money for nice meals/buying Christams presents, stay somewhere round there - prob recommendations on Eurostar website - and get a taxi back at the end of the night.

If you like the oldest stuff near Notre Dame, try Hotel Esmerelda - very very old with squinty beams and comedy-shaped rooms; not v pricey but not glamorous, just v characterful: you wouldn't forget the stay.

Hotel de Varenne is near Eiffel tower and OK location for strolling along the boulevards Saint-Germain and St-Michel but more expensive.

Paris Time Out is usually reasonably honest about listings so I'd try the website first. The 4th arrondissement is also v old and characterful and I know there are lots of small places there, just don't know the names.

If you can say a bit more about what you're looking for to be nearby, I can be a bit more helpful about areas to look at.

Thanks. I´m thinking of paying around 80 euro a night. Ideally I´d like to stay on foot so a hotel within walking distance of major sites (not interested in Eiffel Tower)
Hotel Esmerelda sounds good, but isn´t Notre Dame a bit stuck out on its own (???) Aim of trip is a quiet potter, amble in a museum, sit in a lot of cafes, soak up atmosphere. What is iun 4th district?

Any more tips gratefully received!

Check out Hotel Valadon on trip advisor, very reasonable but great reviews.

Notre dame great for pottering" it's not on its own. In fact, if you like walking, one of the great things about Paris is that you can cover all the sights on foot in a couple of days. Size-wise, the central area inside the ring road doesn't feel bigger than zones 1 + 2 in London, so v compact, relatively speaking, if you know London. Esmerelda really will add to the whole experience if you can get in.
