I can HIGHLY recommend the Santa Special steam trains on the Gloucestershire and Warwickshire Railway. We went yesterday, for the first time, and it was wonderful. Very friendly and homely, yet professional. The trains weren't too packed, the queues for Santa were managed very well, we only waited about 10 mins which flew by. The quality of the gifts was excellent and by chance fitted my children's tastes perfectly. Delicious homemade mince pies and hot drink included in the price, all served by friendly and festively dressed staff. All the staff were really into the spirit of things, which made it even more magical for the children.

We didn't pay for DS as he is under 2, but he was still given a drink, biscuit and "token" present from Santa (a lovely Priddy Bricknell book). All in all a fantastic day out.

The journey starts from Toddington and Santa is at Wincombe station. Nearest towns are Evesham and Cheltenham. We paid £11 each, under 3s are free and get (a very good) token gift, but aren't guaranteed their own seat if the train is full (it wasn't). There is a lovely park and good cafe at Toddington. On non-Santa days, over 3s are only £6.50.

We went on a similar event on the Severn Valley Railway from Kidderminster yesterday and it was truly lovely. The stations were all beautifully decorated, the grotto was all twinkly lighted and Santa was so sweet to DS (who at nearly 2 was a bit bemused but liked his cuddly toy!). All the volunteers who work on the railway were fab and it was brilliantly well organised. Don't know if they are doing any more this year but would thoroughly recommend it.
