I need a hotel at Newark Airport on 21 Dec for one night, as flight does not get in until 23:30, by the time we get through customs etc it will be 1pm ish I would say, and BIL does not want to drive across NYC to wait in New Jersey in the middle of the night if we are delayed!!!!

I would prefer to stay in the Hilton, As I know they are fine but that is currently coming out at $250, can we get cheaper, or are we being unrealistic? We only want to put our heads down for a couple of hours, but would prefer not to share with cockroaches/mice

Or? What is the name of that site that you can use in USA to find cheap hotels? We used it when we were there but I cant remember the name of it...twas like lastminute.com or Expedia, that kind of site...

Travelocity.com is good. According to them you can get the Marriott at the airport for $99, and Marriotts are always fine as they aren't a franchise, but an actual chain

SomeKindofWonderful · 17/11/2008 21:34

Oh I meant Marriott! Not Hilton!!!! DOH! I have stayed in a few Marriott Hotels in USA and they were fine, but not for less than £200! BUT.....

I just found a Marriot for £89!!! In fact I found about 10 all at Newark...How on earth do I know which one is which? I just thought, one bloody hotel but nooooo.....look....

[[https://www.marriott.com/search/findHotels.mi Marriotts everywhere!!!)

I am so rubbish at links!

Make sure it is at the airport only, as the area surrounding the airport is very rough, you would not want to stay there and certainly not break down in your car there. Sorry to worry you, but as I'm sure you know, Newark itself is not a good area full stop. One of my oldest friends used to work at UMDNJ which is at the side of the airport by a few blocks, and walking to your car was dangerous.

RESULT - thanks for reminding me that it was a Marriott!!

Here we are...

this is what I am looking for $99 plus tax, includes shuttle from hotel. Perfect! You can't get a hotel like this in UK for this cheap!

Frizbe - I guessed it was not a pleasant place....do you know if this hotel is ok then? It is right on the airport, but it appears to be a short distance....there is a shuttle there, which was what we wanted..do you know which one is the closest or in the airport itself? They all say they are! . I am a touch concerned about BIL having to come and get us from there in his car?!

phew just checked their own website and the one I linked is actually ON the airport itself...thats grand then, not having to leave the airport at all sounds like a good plan!

Which number are you looking at? 2 and 4 are over by the mall, which is ok (Ikea too!)1's right on the site, so fine. The real roughness starts over the other side of route 78. To be honest I'm sure the others must be ok, 3,5 and 6 or they wouldn't still be in business right? If you scan up and left a bit you can see where the hosptial is, and that's a dodgy bit!

Frizbe · 17/11/2008 21:58

Have a lovely time anyway New York at this time of year is lovely!

SomeKindofWonderful · 17/11/2008 21:59

I am looking at No.4, says it is right on the airport, and if by Ikea, then BIL will be happy as he lives there pretty much!

will be fine, have fun.

SomeKindofWonderful · 17/11/2008 22:13

thank you! I am about to book flights, bus ticket to heathrow and hotel right now! (and of course panic and double check BA to see if they do have any flights to JFK for less than £1800 for us three, before booking these flights!)

Fly Virgin! rite off to bed, happy flight booking, nite

AttilaTheMeerkat · 18/11/2008 08:05

Not Virgin Atlantic!. I'd look carefully at their price before booking. Their service has declined markedly over the intervening years; one drink run, hard seats and disinterested aircrew!.

SomeKindofWonderful · 18/11/2008 18:44

Oh dear Attila - I have booked virgin, they were like a grand cheaper than BA, and £600 cheaper than American Airlines I can cope with one less drink run for a grand less.

OP posts:
Frizbe · 19/11/2008 13:54

I've always had good service on Virgin, so won't complain, they've recently sacked a pile of people who were disinterested too, so you should have a lovely flight

AttilaTheMeerkat · 19/11/2008 14:03

If Virgin are charging 1K less then far enough.

Am glad to read that they've got rid of some dinsinterested crew if this is indeed correct; such poor attitudes towards pax were really doing the airline down. They have declined I feel as an airline over the years; others have caught up and have superceded their services which were once thought of as innovative.

One drink run though for a flight of at least 8 hours is very poor really. If you want another drink you will need to go to the galley area and help yourself.
