What are the differences between Gran Canaria & Tenerife?

Stay away from Playa de las Americas in Tenerife and Playa del Ingles in Gran Canaria, both are big 18-30 type holiday resorts.

We stay in Los Cristianos in Tenerife. Only been to Gran Canaria once, Maspalomas seems nice, loads of bungalows next to the sand dunes, we stayed in Puerto Rico, which I wouldn't really recommend as it's too built up, hotel on top of hotel, but the beaches are nice around there.

Maspalmoas - I will have a look at that

Maspalomas is nice, lovely beaches near the sand dunes. Arguineguin is a small village near Puerto Rico which is also quite quiet and more Spanish. Mogan is a very pretty seaside village with a lovely marina, lots of germans and more pricey though. Tauro and Taurito are also quite quiet but it means you have to travel a bit more if you want to explore.

In Tenerife, would definitely recommend Los Cristianos
