going to buy DH tickets to the rothko exhibition for Christmas -
want to link it to a nice dinner and overnight in a hotel (kids with grandparents in west london)

However I spent a fortune 2 Christmases ago on us going abroad without the children and there was an emergency and we had to come home after 12 hours so am feeling apprehensive about spending alot of money.

would prefer to avoid the bigger chain hotels.

I've stayed at the Millenium Gloucester a few times. Depends if it's near where you want to be but it's very close to Gloucester Road tube station. Looks like they should have rooms within your budget.

(there's a Waitrose and Tesco nearby if you want to buy champers etc without paying hotel prices)

Gordon Ramsay has just opened a small new hotel with Angela Hartnett on the edge of Regent's Park in Camden - York & Albany. V easy to get from there central London, esp South Bank, in about 15-20 mins from Camden Town to Waterloo or London Bridge (highly recommend Borough Market on a Sat morning).
I have eaten there and it was great. The food was excellent and v good value. I have just called them and standard room here is £182 up until xmas.

If you go there you can also have a nice walk on Sunday morning - through Regent's Park and up Primrose Hill for the great views and then around Primrose Hill village which is lovely, great for coffee/lunch and shopping!.
