Travel with unvaccinated baby. Thailand?Tunisia? where's warm & healthy?!

Now I really don't want this to spin off into a vaccine row. I'm training to be a homeopath and in keeping with that general philosophy DD 9mths is totally unjabbed as yet. In any case even if we were to change our minds we're travelling in the next two weeks so it's too late ...

We're looking for some sun (not TOO hot) and plan to spend most of November away. DH points out it may be sensible to avoid areas with troublesome levels of highly contagious diseases until she's at least of an age where she can tell us she's unwell and describe how she feels.

We've been considering Thailand (Koh Phangan, on recommendation), but withering slightly NOT at the idea of monsoon rains, but at the long flight time. A friend suggested Tunisia for an affordable, healthy, family-friendly place where we can have a relaxing holiday with some degree of adventurousness.

Any thoughts gratefully received!

If my DD (10 months) were totally unjabbed I would not be leaving the house, still less the country.

I know that is not what you were hoping for, but you did ask...

tbh the jabs that would make the most difference are typhoid and hep A, which they don't give to tinies anyway.

The biggest danger is her crawling around licking dogs and putting things in her mouth - on this basis a hotel complex / all inclusive type resort is probably your best bet. We've had good ones in Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco, all of which have decent flight times and possibilities for getting 'adventurous' should you so wish, and none of which will be v hot this time of year.

In fact it was only a year ago I took a fully bf but utterly unjabbed 7wk old to Morocco...

you are mad, and in my opinion negligent not to vaccinate your child even against tetanus. You should definitely NOT leave the country.

How about cyprus? warm all year - not too long a flight.

we're taking 2 year old DS and pregnant me (and DH of course) to Eilat in Dec. Advantages are fairly short flight and high standards of hygiene (was totally scared off Egypt after reading all the tales of food poisoning on tripadvisor). Israel should be safe even without jabs. Though why you would not give your child the standard jabs is strange. I can understand worries about MMR etc, but meningitis? If baby is still breastfed I would probably worry less.

TBH a holiday with a baby is unlikely to be that adventurous, our priority with a holiday plus baby was safe, sun, not too long a flight and somewhere where you can just sit around swimming and then have a nice meal. Unless you are really really organised you won't be able to do that much else.. best of luck!

South Africa, took ds with me for 3 weeks no vac's. You can have a luxurious and relatively cheap holiday, stick to the south and southwest coast for mild weather.

needmorecoffee · 20/11/2008 13:09

southern Europe?
I've travelled all over the world unvacinated and am still here.

bossykate · 20/11/2008 13:12

morocco, western peninsular malaysia, cuba?

needmorecoffee · 20/11/2008 13:14

probable risk is tummy bugs.

DS2 and Ds3 are unvaccinated. We can't travel overseas really because of ds1 (ds1 severely autistic - hmm can you guess why ds2 and ds3 are unvaccinated ;o) but if we were to go I'd probably avoid polio areas but otherwise not worry too much.
