Id really like to go to a xmas market. Our summer holiday was disasterous, cut very short and a big old headache so Id love to go someweher for a couple of days this winter.

So where should we go and how much is it likely to cost?
Money is an issue so cant be anything too costly. Any recommendations would be helpful.

A lot of people love Lincoln, its meant to be one of the biggest Xmas markets in Europe.

I enjoyed the Manchester ones the last couple of years, if you'd consider staying in the UK. Loads of other stuff for kids there, too.

Cologne is fantastic if your budget can stretch to it. Don't know about hotels as I only live an hour away. I think there are 4 different Christmas markets as well as a chocolate factory & Cologne is generally a really lovely place to spend a few days.

The one in Nürnberg is fantastic - (www.christkindlesmarkt.de/english/)

I think Ryanair fly to Nurnberg directly, but otherwise you could drive up from Munich.

A group of us are going to Lille next month for a couple of days to go to the market, I've not been before but some of the others have and say it is fab. The train and 2 nights B&B is costing us £200 each.

Bath Christmas Market is lovely, lots of mulled wine, good food and unusual prezzies. 27th Nov - 7th Dec

I also like smaller markets like Abergavenny Tuesday and Glastonbury, Tuesday. I bought some unusaual hand made gifts in Glastonbury last year and Abergavenny has some scrummy food.

In my experience, the German Christmas markets are nicer, bigger and more 'atmospheric' than any of the UK ones that I've visited. Certainly worth a visit if you've never experienced them

furrycat · 17/10/2008 12:23

Oooh Berlin. LOVELY. We flew Air Berlin, v. cheap, got a fab hotel deal because it was off season.
