Ok which is better:

Didcot or [[http://www.steam-museum.org.uk/ this steam museum in Swindon?

I am meeting my brother at half-term and he has been to the Swindon museum and thought my children would like it, but dh (who has been to neither) thinks that Didcot would be better.

They are aged 5 - 12.

Any opinions?

The Swindon museum is all indoors, and doesn't have any actual running engines (or at least didn't 10 years ago!) Didcot is outdoors and you can go for a ride (some days...) I'd love a trip to either, but too far away now!

Thanks. I accidentally posted this thread twice and most of the responses are on the other thread, but I did not want your kind reply to go unacknowledged.

We have decided on Swindon. I am happy for there to be no rides as we have done loads of rides over the years.

I take it you are in Scotland? It is probably still hundreds of miles from you but the National Railway Museum in York is the very best.

in a very sad (but increasingly knowledgeable tone of a mother of boys who never had brothers and no obsession with trains or other moving vehicles until motherhood....) there is a fab walkway at swindon where you go underneath a train engine and look up, i seem to have spent a lot of time with my boys and dh gasping at sanders and bits of engines I had never realsied i would ever see, they loved it! there is a lovely playground in the shopping outlet center if its nice weather, as its all next to each other.

Just to add that the Swindon train museum is fab, my 2 love it.

And National Trust cafe nearby makes a good lunch venue.
