It's my birthday soon and DH and I want to go somewhere for 2 nights to celebrate. No children, just the two of us.

Where would you recommend?

I loved One Aldwych and Threadneedles but would like to try somewhere new this time. Criteria are:

  • must be 5 star
  • not chintz
  • service must be fantastic, I have a thing about this
  • budget not an issue
  • location, ideally central but The City is fine too

I just looked at Tripadvisor and The Soho hotel comes out as no 1 London hotel but it looks a bit chi chi for me. Is Charlotte St the same? I prefer clean lines to floral. And we probably want a suite.

TIA for any views.

Zetter - perhaps not sufficiently 5*?

foxinsocks · 05/10/2008 17:51

WideWebWitch · 05/10/2008 19:16

Charlotte Street excellent, went in June.

Service amazing. Room gorgeous, bathroom huge. It was my birthday and our wedding anniversary, so they upgraded us on arrival, champagne on arrival, just great attention to detail.

location really good, lots of restaurants nearby (and shops!)

bar had a good atmosphere before we went out

i love the interiors of the firmdale group, of which Charlotte St is one.

sophable can tell you about Charlotte St hotel

MrsWeasley · 07/10/2008 16:24

What about Claridges?

I stayed there and it was lovely. Service was excellent. Rooms were fantastic - no floral.

The Sanderson? Great spa.

The Met?

eandz · 07/10/2008 16:34

charlotte st hotel is o.k...we went a few times for when we were trying to spice things up. (we lived around the corner at the time and the builders were too noisy for us to ttc with all the noise)

i think myhotel in bloomsbury is slightly better than charlotte st only because it has a kick ass boutique spa called 'jinnja' which really is amazing.

the mandarin oriental close to kensington is really worth it in my opinion.

Charlotte Street or Covent Garden - both v. good. Covent Garden Hotel has an amazing residents-only bar.

Sanderson

St Martins Lane

Browns is very nice now too.

squeaver · 07/10/2008 20:06

Soho Hotel a bit busy and Soho-ish for me, btw.

crispyduck · 07/10/2008 20:10

The landmark hotel...sry cant do links...dh took me there as a treat in August to cheer me up coz we suffered a miscarriage in june...it really cheered me up

bluesky · 10/10/2008 17:02

did you decide in the end WWW?

minkybetty · 06/11/2008 21:36

Sorry probably way too late for you but the Haymarket rooms are beautiful. Had mtg there tday and viewed their rooms - there are couple of fab suites that open onto decking and rooms are v quiet. Not chintzy. Sampled food and was good.

Just enjoy yourselves with the kids. The main chains really will be the best. You can't beat Marriot.

Whatever you do, enjoy yourselves and go to bed early!! You'll enjoy it.
