Just had email from SIL in USA saying they have found a condo in Kona, would we like to go spend xmas there with them? .

I would love to go!!!

BUT, we already said we would go to NYC to see his other brother, and he is such a misery/tight he wont want to go to Hawaii on hols.

Oh dear. What to do? ! ? ! ?

What would you do?

HOLY fucking crap moses....

I just looked at hawaii by british airways....ready for it...

it will cost.....

£2227 for two adults and a 2 year old.

and it will take

19 hours!

I am not surprised they want to go there though, they live in California - you can fly straight from LA...! (which is where we have to change flights).

Maybe we can get a direct flight with a US airline...oh but I hate them.....

Maybe NYC afterall, straightforward, cheap flights, 8 hours and there...done.

Hi Pavlov,

Have done the journey that is being proposed.
I'd bite your SIL's arm off and go to Kona. NYC in the winter is bloody cold!!.

Flying from NYC to Hawaii will take a long time and also cost you dearly financially. The days of cheap internal flights in the US are long gone (btw children on these flights do not get any discount).

Have been to Kailua-Kona on Hawaii - its very lovely and very quiet. Hardly saw anybody there the year we went.

No direct flights to Honolulu operate from the UK - you will have to change planes on the West Coast.

There are other hubs you can use other than LAX (which is a hellhole of an airport anyway particularly when you have to change terminals). Would suggest Seattle as an alternative; its a quieter hub and the flight from the UK is not so long (about 9 hours with a further 6 hours onto Honolulu).

This is also an important point. What you also need to bear in mind is that these flights from the Mainland (i.e West coast US) will fly onto Honolulu - you will then need to catch an Interisland flight to the Big Island. That will take about 40-50 minutes and you will fly into Kailua-Kona airport. Hawaiian is the main interisland carrier now as Aloha went bust. BTW if you use Hawaiian for any portion of your trip you will need to phone through your reservation to their UK office as their website currently does not offer website payment facilities to UK customers.

Any other questions just ask.

Attila
