Presents for French children: girl aged 8 and boy aged 5 - inspiration needed

We'll be visiting Dh's family in France and want to buy presents for the children.
No idea what an 8 year old girly girl or 5 year old boysey boy would like, so any thoughts much appreciated.

Also, it's going to be the girl's birthday when we're visiting, so shall we get her an extra present?

How much do you want to spend? Do they speak English (if so, appropriate stage English books?).
For a girly girl, "anything from Claire's Accessories " my DD would say.
For the boy, lego or knex? (am out of date on little boys stuff tho).

I'd take a little something extra for her birthday.

Ws going to spend about a tenner on each.
english books might be a good idea, so's Claire's Accessories ... might get a bag from there.

Thanks lilo
