Unfotunately I haven't been myself but my brother and SIL went for their honeymoon in Feb 06. They didn't have a bad word to say about the place, absolutely raved about it !
DB wasn't overly keen on the sea plane though ......

PestoMonster · 11/07/2008 20:44

Sorry, been to the Maldives, but not that particular atoll.

T'was fab btw.

UniversallyChallenged · 11/07/2008 20:57

Thanks FL, an that is such a relief to hear. The only thing that worries me is the apparently open air loos , though maybe i am reading the blurb wrong!

Pesto which one did you go to and what were the good/bad points please?

OP posts:
PestoMonster · 11/07/2008 21:03

We went to Meerufenfushi.

Best points:

bare feet for the whole fortnight
didn't have to take any cash, just signed for everything and paid at the end of the two weeks

beautiful island, had the beach to ourselves
crystal clear waters
perfect snorkelling

Worst points

we didn't have a/c (just a ceiling fan)

Can't think of any more worst points. It was a truly magical place. Quiet, unsophisticated, not very commercialised and very very laid-back and relaxing

PestoMonster · 11/07/2008 21:04

We had an open-air bathroom and it was awesome

Really really not a problem in any way

UniversallyChallenged · 11/07/2008 21:15

Thank you thank you!! Am off to google Meerufenfushi xx

Have been to the Maldives many times, but not to Kuredu - though it is on my wish list. It is quite remote and the diving is meant to be fantastic (I know a few people who have gone). But unfortunately for us they won't allow children (I think under 8, but may even be older), so we won't be able to go there for a while.

morethanyoubargainfor · 11/07/2008 21:17

Another vote for maldives but not that particular Atoll. That doesn't really help does it.

Open air bathrooms are fab and we really used ours, like at least twice a day each!

olyoly · 11/07/2008 21:49

I am soooooo jealous! I wish that I could advise

UniversallyChallenged · 12/07/2008 00:05

Pesto I think you have changed my mind! Have been looking at Meerufenfushi it's stunning isnt it. Hayes and Jarvis do a pretty good package deal. Which accomo would you recommend? I love the jacuzzi villas - but think i would prefer one on the beach rather than in the sea.

Has anyone here flown with SriLankan Airlines?

Thanks Killer and Morethan, it seems no one has a bad word in general about the Maldives.Though that bathroom still makes me shudder!!

and sorry Olyoly!

We've been to Kuredu (march 2003), it was our first trip to the Maldives and it was excellent. We stayed in a beach villa, yes the bathrooms are outside, but that's v typical and v clean a lovely.

It's quite a big resort and there were families there when we stayed.

It was pre-DD and we were going to both learn to dive, but i was sick and DP learnt on his own. The on-site dive school (prod-ivers) were excellent. I actually got better and did some diving them. The snorkelling is excellent - the house reef is amazing.

Kuredu is quite far from Male, so we got a sea plane both ways.

We went to Angsana in October when I was pregnant. It was real close to Male and got a speed boat transfer. No children resort, the dive school better there (obviously I couldnt dive). No pool (there was a pool at Kuredu and it was lovely). It was posher and more lux but if you're not drinking or diving it gets a little boring - you can walk around the island in about 15mins.

SriLankan Airlines - I am only 5ft2 and dp is 5ft4 and the econ class seats were really tight for us. Horrid. A friend from work who also flew with them was so hot and uncomfy on the plane that she passed out!!

UniversallyChallenged · 13/07/2008 00:20

thank you babyocho that is really helpful. Cant wait to do the diving - wherever we end up!

Dh is 6ft 1 so am a little worried now re the seats! He'll end up with his legs around his head if they were a squeeze at 5ft 2 !!

Pesto - who did you fly with and book with please?

Bertolli · 13/07/2008 21:55

Have been to the Hilton one (Rangali Isand) which i think has now been taken over by someone like Conran?? Was awesome, quite large, two islands joined by foot bridge. Underwater restaurant. Food selection/stuff to do excellent. Sea plane transfer.(45 min)

Also been to The Banyan Tree, next to Angsana, which was much smaller. Fabulous beach villas, very romantic, castaway. Families welcome, but potentially more "boring" for kids as is smaller. Still, if your kids just like hanging with you and playing on beach it's perfect. Villas all have own jetty out into sea which i suppose could be potential hazard
Speed boat transfer (15 min) (Great if you have been traveling for past 12 hours!)

Incredible experience to see such places.
Hope you get to do it

PestoMonster · 14/07/2008 10:19

Sorry I was off-line all weekend. We flew with Monarch Airlines and I think we went with Tropical Places. But it was quite a long time ago, so you might find it's sold through other places nowadays.

Good luck!

UniversallyChallenged · 14/07/2008 12:45

Thanks Pesto. Have fallen in love with Meeru so will be booking that this week. First Choice have some really good price, will look at Tropical though as not heard of those.

Bertolli, wow that look a 5 star resort!! And i nearly choked when you mentioned the word children!! No way, no way - it's just dh and I this time - sorry kids !!

Thanks all for info xx

Hi UC
We have been to the Maldives twice both times to Lily Beach Resort. I was fantastic!!

Will second the comments about airlines. We booked our holiday with tradewinds (back in 2004) and their standard airline was Monarch - 1 word about them.... don't!!!
We flew monarch first time and it was terrible.

Second time we flew Qatar Airways and Emirates. Much much better. Would highly recommend flying with a better airline!!
Don't believe what the travel agent tells you, it may be fine for 2 hours to spain but it is a long flight and you won't want it to spoil your holiday.

One other thing, we had a transfer in a seaplane which was awesome!!

Please let me know if I can help any more.

, dead jealous of you now

UniversallyChallenged · 14/07/2008 13:05

oh no now I have to google the one you went too - i hate to think i am missing out on anything did you stay in a jacuzzi water villa or beach villa?

thanks for that about the airlines - will make sure it's a good one then and not Monarch!

OP posts:
doggyandteddy · 14/07/2008 13:53

Bloody hell, just had a look at their website and it's all changed!!!
So not sure what it will be like. The main things we liked and would look for in a resort if we went again were:
Go all inclusive - all we paid for at the end was 14 magnum ice creams, 1 each per day!!!

Go to a resort where there aren't many rooms/villas etc.... you want tranquility not shoulder to shoulder on the beach

Apart from that, can't really recommend. Overall our experience of the maldives was fantastic. the people are so friendly, the quality of the food and accomodation was excellent and the climate and sea for snorkelling and relaxing was great.

Hope that helps!
