Anyone in the hotel trade? Event at Millenium Stadium and all hotels are showing no availability...

a whole year ahead.

Every year DH goes to an event in cardiff and every year it's almost impossible to find a hotel room. Surely the whole city is not booked up for June 2009? Please can anyone advise me how I can get around this and actually book a room? Thanks

Have you callled the local tourism centre?

runnyhabbit · 03/07/2008 23:12

Its because the Speedway is on.

We've had to find accomdation for collegaues coming from Germany, and the only nice hotels we could find we're in Neath/Swansea. All the hotels etc in Cardiff are fully booked for about 3weeks

runnyhabbit · 03/07/2008 23:12

Sorry, crap spelling.

brokenbiscuits · 03/07/2008 23:15

Are they all booked? wow
here some can you stay a bit further out at all?

ChippyMinton · 03/07/2008 23:15

yes, it's the speedway they go to

We have just joined YHA for £10 via details on here. Some of the places are really nice and have ensuites, family rooms etc

brokenbiscuits · 03/07/2008 23:17

any campsites nearby?

[shrug stupid suggestion emoticon}

undertheduvet · 03/07/2008 23:23

I used to work in hotels. They wont have sold all the rooms but they will have taken block bookings for companies/groups for this event that will have taken up all the extra rooms they have.
The hotels I used to work in had 295 rooms and about 150 or so of these rooms were already taken on any particular day due to allocations of rooms for airlines, corporate accounts etc, so by taking extra groups for this event they will in theory have "sold out". However in reality not all these rooms will end up being taken, some being released back into their system anytime from months before to that day.
It is a complete pain especially as you only want a couple of rooms.
Have you phoned any of the hotels direct? they may show no availbilty on the web but have some left in their internal system.
Alternatively you could try a couple of middle men like expedia, superbreak, FHR.
These companies usually have allocations of rooms per night and you may be able to get one or two this way.
One of the problems with Cardiff is thatthey have a massive stadium and very few hotels, if they are prepared to travel a bit have you considered other towns or even over the severn bridge?
Hope some of this helps, good luck!

ChippyMinton · 03/07/2008 23:29

Fimbo - thank you!! I have just booked a family room at the YHA. Looks like we are all going next year

brokenbiscuits - there is a campsite in the city centre, but DH wasn't keen.

Chippy - that's great. I have been having a pretty crap week and that post has actually cheered me {misty eyed emoticon]

catinthehat · 04/07/2008 13:32

and thanks to undertheduvet for being chopped liver

ChippyMinton · 05/07/2008 10:15

to you too!
Can't say I'm impressed when someone troubles to write out a lot of useful stuff and is..well..blanked I think is the right word.

ChippyMinton · 05/07/2008 18:59

You may have a point catinthehat but I think it's rather rude to come onto a thread that you have not contributed to, and start policing it. And I have no idea what the rather vile reference to offal means

underthduvet and runnyhabbit, thank you for your help

Why are you being so unpleasant?

Undnertheduvet wasn't ignored- if you look at the timing of the posts it's likely that the Chippy was booking whilst UTD was typing.

Happens all the time, doesn't it.

Spot on SueW. And it was late at night, I wanted to get to bed not re-read the whole thread. Threads would be HUGE if we were constantly acknowleding each other's input (although I do agree this was a very helpful post)
Just rather perplexed as to why someone I have never heard of should step onto my thread and start flinging insults around.

What about B&Bs, plenty of them around.

ChippyMinton · 06/07/2008 11:19

Thanks ripeberry, but we are sorted - I booked a family room in the youth hostel, as suggested by Fimbo
