Weekend near Rome in Jan

DS is on a year abroad in Rome. We’d like to visit in mid January for his birthday and spend a weekend in a place accessible by train from Rome. Rome itself is an option but less appealing as we’ve all spent a lot of time there. We have also visited Florence quite recently.

I was thinking of Naples but there are very few flights (I want to fly BA for boring points reasons) so we can’t go for the weekend.

Can anyone suggest anything?

How about Orvieto- about an hour from Rome by train. There’s enough to do for a leisurely weekend - the cathedral is beautiful and you can do an interesting cave tour. We went in July and it wasn’t crowded then so January should be even better.

Thanks for the advice, @adviceatthislatestage! I’ve been there years ago but hadn’t thought of it. Great idea.

Orvieto is a very good shout and gorgeous but if you want to try somewhere different you could also check out Viterbo, Tivoli or Burghesi.

Thanks, @ginasevern. Will investigate.

We recently did a Rome trip and loved Tivoli. We were saying we wished we’d stayed there. I don’t know what accommodation is like but we loved the two villas we saw (Villa d’este and gregoriano) and didn’t make it to the third big one.

Thanks @Bunnycat101!

So many enticing possibilities!

It will probably be quiet in January, but is a lovely town by the sea, half an hour from Porta San Paolo station in central Rome. Ostia Lido. From there you can go to the magnificent ancient Roman site of Ostia Antica which IMO is on a par with Pompeii, without the crowds.
