Lone parent to child who will be nearly 6 Dec 2027.... my dream is to visit Lapland and have a traditional festive experience BUT i am feeling overwhelmed by all the different options / going round and round with research.

If anyone has been, can you give some realistic hints, tips, advice please? Every article I read tends to say it is magical and christmassy, BUT I want real perspectives and suggestions for where to go / things to do. This will be a huge chunk out of my budget / once in a lifetime trip, so putting pressure on myself to get it right I think :( thank you

I went with some company called something like Lapland trips or similar. It was the best thing I’ve ever done. The package was great we stayed two nights which meant less pressure on the daytime. The package meant we had all the right kit and didn’t have to buy much. I would absolutely do it again if I could!

You can do a DIY trip for a fraction of the price. It won’t be as fancy, but our trip was still an amazing experience.

We flew into Helsinki (great city: very Christmassy) and then took the overnight sleeper train to Rovaniemi. Waking up the next morning to the snow was such a thrill.

We dumped our bags at our apartment, and then continued in the taxi straight to the Santa Village. Spent day there, did the reindeer ride etc, bus back to apartment, and then repeated the next day. End of that day, we took the sleeper back to Helsinki. All this came in at less than £1k for our family of 3.

I think one of the budget airlines now flies direct to Rovaniemi now, though, so worth checking. Getting accommodation sorted is the most important; book by end summer for a December tip.
