Car Hire in FRance - DIesel or Petrol? What's more economical?

About to book car hire in France and it's giving me choice of petrol or diesel.
I know nothing about cars, but have heard people going on about diesel being cheaper, so should I go for diesel car? And is diesel cheaper than petrol in France? Because I've noticed diesel is more expensive than petrol in this country.

Also, any other features I should ask for in car hire? (We're taking own car seat and have already asked for air con).

try this website type in your destination and it gives you the best prices and where to get it near you.

Going from Paris to Roanne, to Le Mans, to Paris
Website looks fab.
DH is bi-lingual French so he can look at the untranslated version.
Thanks very much!!

We use this company all the time [http://www.carhire3000.com/], esp when in America. Have also used in Spain.

It acts like a broker to all the big car hire firms but cheaper or with more stuff thrown in.

If you're concerned about fuel costs then go for a diesel - even if the price of diesel is more expensive than petrol, you will go much further with it, especially if you are travelling long distance.
