New York hotels

We’re planning a family trip to NY next spring for me, Dh, ds21 and ds17.

Can anyone recommend any hotels that have twin bedded rooms and / or apartment style hotels that would accommodate us all? The rooms with 2 beds in hotels that we’ve looked at so far seem to have 2 queen beds to sleep 4 adults, which adds a huge amount to the cost, but it seems a bit unfair to expect our adult children to share a bed. We have joked that we’re going to just get one big family room and bunk in together but in all honesty that’s might be where we end up!

We have a decent budget for the trip (£6k for 5 nights - a lot more than we ever spend but it’s for 2 special birthdays and our 25th wedding anniversary) but nonetheless I’d rather not pay twice as much money for their hotel room so they don’t have to snuggle up in a bed together!

It’s all a bit overwhelming - we’ve never travelled outside Europe before - and I want to get it right. Have had so much good travel advice on here in the past that I’m hoping someone out there can solve our dilemma!

Try Mint House in FiDi

BristolHelp · 26/10/2026 19:44

Have you looked on Airbnb? You can narrow down your search by using the bedroom/beds filters.

We stayed at the Mint House in downtown Manhattan and it was fab. 3 double bedrooms and a large family kitchen diner. It also has a communal games room!

Thanks - I’ll take a look at the Mint House. Have you booked through Airbnb @BristolHelp? We were planning to use a travel agent to be a bit more secure.

Last year I stayed at Hotel Beacon with my two teenage sons. They do loads of different room types and we had a suite which had a bedroom with 2 Queen beds and a separate living area with a double sofa bed. I don't think that was the biggest room they had but was obviously big enough for us and could maybe work for you? The rooms have little kitchenettes too, which was surprisingly useful for breakfasts etc. But it very much feels like a hotel rather than an apartment. We loved it!

Normally use the Hilton Midtown. Lots of room options, great location and if you have Hilton Points then it’s even cheaper.

Edited

AirBnB is very difficult as the majority of rentals are now forbidden. You can still book serviced apartments but not your typical flat rental anymore.

You have to stay with the host, so back to the original AirBnB idea and the host has to be registered and there are limitations how many guests can stay.

Have a look at the Sonesta hotels, there's a couple in New York.

mamaduckbone · 27/10/2026 19:59

Nothing is quite working - even the big rooms have 2 doubles and a sofa bed, plus the dc have said they’d rather have their own room and share a bed than have to share a room with us, so it looks like we’re going that way. Any further recommendations for brilliant hotels for first time visitors that won’t completely break the budget would be greatly appreciated!

I don't have suggestions for your particular scenario but beware that some (most) NY hotels charge a "destination fee", a bit like tourist tax but much more. This is not always clear when you book and is supposed to be for use of a concierge etc but no refund if you don't use these services. When I last visited in 2024 the fee was 35usd per night. Paid upfront!

DH and I stayed at the Best Western Empire State with DC of similar age - involved 2 rooms, DC had a room with 2 queen beds. Good hotel and great location.

NYC is just expensive though.

Yes very expensive. I also couldn't get used to the overpowering smell of weed everywhere.

May be try Radio City Apartments? Stay way from air b and b as it’s mostly illegal these days.

mamaduckbone · 27/10/2026 20:29

Yes, we know that @saveforthatbut thanks for the heads up.
We can get a room with 2 queen beds @SabrinaThwaitejust about within budget but I was hoping there might be options that don’t involve spending almost £1k more than a room
with one bed!

Also recommend them, we stayed at the one not far from empire state. It was great, clean and had spacious flexible accommodation

You’re essentially 4 adults who need two rooms (unless you all want to spend 5 nights in the same room). It’s often a not dissimilar rate for 1 king bed or 2 queen beds.

The hotel I suggested for 5 nights in March next year is £2200 for 2 king rooms or £2350 for 2 double queen rooms.

mamaduckbone · 27/10/2026 22:04

The Sonesta hotel looks great, and isn’t outrageously more expensive for two queen beds so that could be a winner, thanks.
@SabrinaThwaite- some of the hotels we had already looked at were charging hundreds of pounds more for a room with 2 queen beds rather than one, which is why I started the thread for suggestions. I’ll look at the Best Western too - good to know it also isn’t too much more for a twin room - thanks for doing my research for me!

You’re welcome - we just stayed a couple of nights but it was a great location. There’s an Irish pub a couple of blocks away that does decent food at reasonable rates.

Hampton Inns and Suites often configure quite well, they often have one bedroom suites so a proper bedroom, closed off with a small living room and sofa bed plus a kitchenette which was great with smaller kids who just wanted some cereal and milk as they didn't quite fill up at the restaurant. If you can find the right room it works with teenagers too. My husband travels there quite a bit so I can't attest to it personally, but staying in Jersey City can really bring down costs, you get the beautiful Manhattan views, he says it feels really safe. You wouldn't want to be getting around a lot by taxi though as there are additional costs in tunnels/bridges. Public transport though is really good between them if not slightly more complicated.

Finally if you are travelling in spring you want to be careful the T&C don't suddenly change as some places have problems with "spring Breakers" - college kids who tend to be quite rowdy so they up the age limit to 25 plus. Book the room as Mum plus kid one and Dad plus kid two to avoid any issues. Hope you have a fab time!

nixon1976 · 28/10/2026 02:26

The Pod Times Square (it’s really Hell’s Kitchen ) is great. The doubles are tiny but we book the bunks and they are super cheap and then you get two beds.

joyava · 28/10/2026 02:50

I’ve stayed in the London Marriott residence inn (2 bed suite) & it was very comfortable.

I think this is the type of place you’re looking for.

This one is in the Bronx - suite with 2 double bed rooms, plus sofa bed in the living room/kitchen.

joyava · 28/10/2026 03:03

I can also recommend the Hotel Edison off Times Square. Just checked and they have 2 bedroom “signature family suites” that look like they would work for you & within your budget.

ArtieChoke · 28/10/2026 03:22

We stayed at the Marriott beside the twin towers site

there was 3 of us and the double beds were small. I’d certainly find it a squeeze with 4 people

so don’t stay there

Check out the Park Terrace hotel in Bryant park. Brilliant location. Clean, modern. All the rooms have large picture windows so great views. Your daughters would need to share a bed. You may however spend most of your budget on hotel rooms though
