I don’t think I know anybody who’s come back from Egypt without food poisoning. But I’m still thinking of going to see the pyramids and all the usual historical sites. Not lying on a beach or all inclusive. Has anybody been avoided food poisoning? I’m thinking of throwing a bit of money at it. I want to go this time next year ie October half term. I’m vegetarian so this will rule out a lot of food groups like salad.

I haven't been to Egypt, but have travelled a lot, are you wanting a group trip or private tour? I have done numerous trips with Exodus, Explore and Intrepid, those are group trips but always been fabulous and they all do Egypt. Lots of companies like Audley and Cox and Kings could tailor something specific to you, but going to be far more expensive.

Have you thought about a Nile cruise?

HatethedarknightsQW · 26/10/2026 11:06

We went with a specialist Egypt tour operator - sorry can't remember the name.

We went on a Nile cruise - it was on a smaller boat - and you got your own personal guide - who was amazing. I thought that would be weird but it wasn't and meant we could stay as long as we wanted at places where we were interested rather than following a group.

I absolutely loved it - it was so interesting. The food was good rather than gourmet - but no one got sick - we ate salads on the boat and were fine. And the guide was really good at taking or suggesting places off the boat were the food was good.

We then took ourselves off to Cairo for a few days - which was a blast. I'd love to go back.

Didn't get sick.

My DH did get sick on an earlier trip to an AI in Sharm (Sharm was OK but just OK) - he ate prawns on our last night...idiot.

I am also vegetarian. Been twice for history trips. No food poisoning. It was amazing and I highly recommend.
I didn't eat salads. Ate veggie food that was basic rather than gourmet.
I didn't use a tour operator and organised it myself.

We are booked with Trailfinders, leaving next month! Obviously can’t vouch for them for Egypt specifically, but they did a very good job for us when we went to Japan a couple of years ago.

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 26/10/2026 11:48

We've been twice & never been ill.
I highly recommend discoveregypt.co.uk
They do packages, but can put together exactly what you want.
e.g. we did Cairo, Luxor, River Nile, Lake Nasser, Abu Simbel.
5 or 6 flights + all transfers, all excursions, met & escorted at every point, & everything went without a hitch. All meals, bar dinners at the hotels in C. & L.
Very reasonable price

We went independently to Cairo and had an amazing time. No food poisoning. We used these guys https://realegypt.com/ who were brilliant. Collected us from airport (from plane steps) and got us through customs early. We did 2 days of tours with them, one pyramid day and one market and museums (although GEM wasn’t open then so itinerary may be different now). They picked us up at 6 and we were only people as the early museums - it was fabulous. Guide was great. I’ve recommended them to other people who have had similarly good experiences with them.

Thank you. A couple of companies I hadn’t heard of. I’ll check them out.

@NestaVipaz please report back to this thread ! And have a great time!

Explore Worldwide....

Theonethatmakesmelaugh · 27/10/2026 21:52

I went on an Explore family tour with my then 9 year old. Just over a week. We crammed in a lot of history, a felucca on the Nile, overnight train, balloon ride and a couple of days on the red sea for beach/snorkeling. It was fab. Very easy as a vegetarian - loads of delicious food. I did get a very minor case of diarrhoea but it was not bad at all and did not stop me from enjoying everything. It was an absolutely fantastic week .
