Luxury hotels in Vienna – any recommendations?

Hi everyone, a couple I'm friends with are planning a weekend trip to Vienna and are looking for a really nice hotel. They'd like to treat themselves to something a bit special. Preferably a 5-star hotel with a lovely atmosphere, comfortable rooms and perhaps a spa or pool.
Location is quite important too, as they'd like to explore the city on foot and enjoy some nice restaurants while they're there.
I've been trying to help them find something suitable, but there are so many options that it's hard to know which ones are actually worth the money.
Has anyone stayed at a luxury hotel in Vienna that they'd recommend? I'd love to hear about your experiences!

Hotel Sacher is incredible. If you stay with a child, they give you a voucher for a free nights stay between their 18th and 21st birthdays 🥹

Another vote for the Sacher. The Amauris is also lovely.

You also get first dibs on tables at the Sacher cafe - there was a queue around the block when we were there, but as a hotel guest, we just breezed on in.

Hot Choc with a shot of Amaretto and a slice of Sachertorte is truly the food of the Gods!

It's directly opposite the Opera House too, which I very much recommend.

Grand Ferdinand

Don't know if this is 5 star but it's a lovely hotel and very central.

Oh my goodness, how lovely is that?! 😍Such a sweet idea and a wonderful way to encourage them to come back when they're older! Have you stayed at the Sacher yourself? And if so, what did you think of the rooms and the overall atmosphere?

The Sacher seems to be a popular choice! 😂I've also come across the Amauris while looking at hotels. Have you stayed there yourself? What did you particularly like about it?

Oh, I love that you call Vienna your soul city! 😊How often do you get to visit? And do you usually stay at the Sacher or Imperial when you're there, or do you enjoy trying out different hotels? I'd be curious to know which of the two you prefer and why!

I'm genuinely surprised by how many people here have been to Vienna! 😄 And skipping the queue at Café Sacher sounds like a brilliant perk, especially if it was that busy! Hot chocolate with Amaretto and a slice of Sachertorte sounds absolutely heavenly. I might have to add that to my own travel wish list! Did you get a chance to explore the hotel itself, or was the café the highlight of your stay?

Thanks for the recommendation! 😊 I've just had a quick look and it does seem lovely, especially the rooftop pool! Would you say it has more of a modern, relaxed atmosphere or does it still feel quite luxurious? My friends are hoping for something a little special.

This one is reliably good and in a very convenient location by the museums quarter: https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g190454-d3346123-Reviews-Hotel_Sans_Souci_Wien-Vienna.html

My ancestry is Austro-Hungarian, so I feel the beauty of Austria deep in my bones and my blood. I also think Vienna is, objectively, a very beautiful city. I visit at least once a year.

I think both The Sacher and The Imperial are wonderful hotels and I pretty much alternate them. The bar and the restaurant (Opus) in Imperial are slightly more glam/fine dining than Sacher (the chef in Opus has Michelin stars, though I'm not sure the restaurant currently does), but Sacher is maybe slightly more cosy/ friendly. You really cannot go wrong with either hotel. 😊

Hotel Konig von Ungarn is fantastic - quite old-fashioned (in a good way) and no spa or pool, but very central, lovely staff, and big rooms (some double level). If you want a bit of character, and "old Vienna", then I would highly recommend.

I was lucky enough to stay there for work. Absolutely lovely - the spa is fantastic and brilliant food. I would personally choose the Sacher over it though - the Amauris is new and very slick but the Sacher has far more charm IMO.

Yes, we stayed there when we went to see the Christmas Markets and the Vienna State Opera.

Hotel Sacher was just off the scale - you can have champagne and Sachertorte as part of the breakfast buffet!

We had a one bed suite (so our DS could stay in the living room). It was just beautiful. The suites are all named after famous operas and are super plush.

It's very similar in vibe to Claridges - Iconic, discreet, slightly tongue in cheek...

I’ve stayed at this hotel twice and can highly recommend it.
It’s very centrally located and you can reach the city centre in just a few minutes’ walk. You can even see the main sights directly from the hotel. There are plenty of museums in the immediate vicinity. It’s a lovely, trendy neighbourhood with several bars and restaurants. There’s also a major shopping street right nearby.
The hotel itself is beautifully furnished and to a very high standard, and the food is superb. Breakfast was excellent and the restaurant serves some very good Austrian dishes. The wine is excellent too :)
There’s also a spa area. It was lovely to be able to pop into the spa after a long walk around the city and relax in the sauna and the pool.
I was in Vienna last Advent – a lovely time to visit because of all the Christmas markets. There are three right nearby, and it’s not far to the big Christmas market in front of City Hall either.

TableTopTree · 20/10/2026 11:25

The ice rink at the Christmas Market has an actual piste, as in it has 'downhill' segments!

Ask me how I know 🤦‍♀️

We stayed in The Imperial this year and it was very nice. Not like Four Seasons 5 star but very nice nonetheless and in a very good location.
