Melbourne Travel Ideas

I’m going to be in Melbourne Australia on my own in December for about four days. Obviously, I want to have a look around Melbourne but would quite like to go out of the city, on the train ideally. I’m very happy to stay somewhere out of the city for a night or two. I like hiking but wouldn’t want to do a long distance hike on my own but could happily walk for half a day. I also enjoy wine tasting, good food, art. Has anyone got any good suggestions please?

Half price train/bus/tram travel in Victoria until Jan 27. You can now tap on with your phone or purchase a Myki public transport card. Check out the Public Transport Victoria site. Daylesford is a nice town out of the city with many hot springs, good walks and vineyards. The tourist info sites are helpful.

Lots of great places a short train ride from Melbourne. To see wineries you’d need to hire a car. Geelong is an hour away via a very pleasant train trip. Lots of wineries in the area and some coastal walks. You could also catch the train to Kyneton, about 1 hour away which is a beautiful old historical town with wineries about. Hanging Rock is nearby and a nice little hike to do on your own. Castlemaine and Bendigo are not much further on from there. All of this would require a car, though.

Oh, I second Daylesford! Beautiful town.

An option from the city is to take a Port Phillip Ferry from Docklands to Port Arlington. They offer a return trip, lunch at Jack Rabbit Winery and you can also have a wine tasting experience. It’s a good option that gets you to a vineyard without a car. You’ll find the experience on the Port Phillip Ferry website. Geelong is a good shout too, the gallery and wool museum are interesting and a walk along the front with a stop for lunch and a swim.

Fantastic! Thank you. I’ll look at all of these and get booking.
