Worried about Blue Lagoon changing / showers - Iceland

Witchhunted · 09/10/2026 21:58

We are going to Iceland in a few weeks and my family are determined to go to Blue Lagoon, so please don't just say "don't go".

But Im really stressed about having to get totally naked publicly to shower. I have real issues with being naked due to trauma and, to make it worse, im likely to be on my period which even though i can use tampons just makes the whole thing even worse.

My family are all men / boys so will be off in the mens changing and I'll be alone.

Does anyone have any experience?
Could i get away with showering in a bikini or swimsuit?

I dont want to ruin the whole experience for everyone else, plus it's crazy expensive.

Don’t worry, there are shower cubicles! There is a big open shower bit but some individual ones too.

Icelanders are super hot on pool hygiene, which is great. So you do have to get naked… but can do so on private.

(I hate to say this… but also don’t go. It’s so, so expensive for what it is, when all the pools, including council ones, in Iceland are amazing).

I have been we used the shower cubicles there was no getting naked infront of anyone. The changing area is very nice. We loved it you will really enjoy it.

If you do have to shower in the communal shower bit, you're going to stick out way more in a swimsuit/bikini than you would if you were naked. No one will look twice and nothing bad will happen to you.

How would anyone know what someone was wearing in a cubicle? Or tbh - if you were in a big open bit is someone going around shouting take your swim wear off? Like would be a bit weird :)

Good to know there are cubicles as I’d like to go one day!

Nlsa · 09/10/2026 22:08

they have cubicles. it's fine don't worry

Linguist1979 · 09/10/2026 22:12

I worried about this too and it was fine as there were cubicles! I loved the blue lagoon but when my daughter went back with school she said the sky lagoon was just as good.

Sunbringer · 09/10/2026 22:58

I find it funny because when you stay in the attached hotel they don’t make you shower at all. I waded straight in from lunch in the restaurant.

Wolfiefan · 09/10/2026 22:59

Let them head there. You go to the Sky lagoon. Much nicer!

HorseandHeron · 09/10/2026 23:02

I loved Blue Lagoon. The other public spa pools are gorgeous (especially the Secret Lagoon) but this one is different - the white clay rubs, the bar in the pool, the views over the volcanic rocks. I could have stayed all day.

Yellowshirt · 09/10/2026 23:02

I didn't get naked in front of anyone. The one I went to was very clean and full of families with children. I didn't see anyone naked.
My daughter was 9 at the time so we wouldn't have taken her to a naturist facility.

TheRealSmurfette · 09/10/2026 23:17

You don’t have to op!

TheCompactPussycat · 09/10/2026 23:24

DD went there on a school trip when she was 16. I certainly wouldn't have heard the end of it if she'd had to get naked in front of other people, so I'm pretty sure there's some privacy.

Sorry for delayed reply, thanks so much everyone, this has made me feel so much better!! Can i ask - do all ticket levels get access to the cubicles or only certain ticket types please, and are the cubicles to actually wash in, not just get changed? Thanks again you wonderful lot!

Would your family consider the Sky Lagoon as an alternative? I think it's nicer, and the showers are all in individual cubicles.

There are shower cubicles and changing cubicles within the changing rooms, available to everyone not just specific people

We did the cheapest entry and it was shower cubicles. No public nudity. I loved it there, it was magical.

I went a few years ago before they made the pool larger. It was mainly tourists who are far less likely to be sticklers about naked showering! All tickets had access to the same change area when I went.

From memory, the more expensive ones include towels/flip flops, a drink at the bar and/or a meal etc. I got changed in a cubicle and showered in my suit. I can't recall if that was in an open area or private cubicle but certainly no nakedness from me. Also- I don't recall seeing anyone naked there at all! 🤔

FlatStanley50 · 11/10/2026 15:55

Yes no getting naked. There are communal showers at the secret lagoon but again my daughter (aged 8 at the time) and I did not get naked and no one batted an eyelid though most were naked)

pilates · 11/10/2026 15:57

You don’t have to so don’t worry.

LivingThe50sDream · 11/10/2026 16:17

The Blue Lagoon is minging. People drinking in the pool, loads of hair and bits in the changing rooms and loads of people. We only stayed about 10 mins.

Now the secret lagoon was gorgeous and we felt a million dollars afterwards.

I already commented up thread but didn't find the pool dirty at all. I'd read that there was clay you could put on your face/body, but couldn't see where it was. I saw a receptacle at the side facing the pool. I jumped up, stuck my hand inside, assuming it was a vat of clay- to find it was a rubbish bin 😳

Offshore111 · 16/10/2026 15:35

Lol this brings back memories! Went with a group of girlfriends and we had no idea about that rule until we got there. Like others have said there are cubicles but not many. Honestly it’s not that bad I have no memory of what others looked like nude so I’m sure it’s the same for them. We’ve never mentioned it since apart from taking the p out of one friend for what she said there
