Considering a return trip to India in my fifties

Is it a crazy idea to visit India in my fifties? I went many time when I was younger and absolutely loved it. I was wondering about going in case I never get the chance again. I understand it can be ‘unsafe’ in places but I never experienced that myself and I’ve spent over 2 years there all in all. Maybe it has changed, looking for anyone who has been recently.

No, it’s not a crazy idea. Where did you spend 2 years?
Go to Southern India, if you haven’t been.

I have been pretty much everywhere except the states that were experiencing unrest but it was so long ago. I’d like to see how it has changed and travel properly again.

Why would it be mad. You are young. My parents last went their 70’s

Don’t think it’s that unusual op To go there in your 50s 🤷‍♀️ one of by best friends goes 3 months of the year every year for 20 years (she’s 50 we all went there for her 50th birthday party last year - I even escaped my little for 2.5 weeks to join them - we were in Goa mainly (did go via Mumbai)

Can I just say I love you a little bit for saying 50s is "young" ? 🤭 At 57 I'm feeling not so young right now for various reasons and your comment cheered me a wee bit!

I thought that you spent 2 years in India! Sorry got that wrong

It’s not a place I’d want to visit

But I don’t know why age is relevant

My colleague’s mum goes every year. She went when she was in her 20s and she just absolutely fell in love with it so that’s where she goes every year. She didn’t go when she was raising children so I suppose that was about a 20 year gap.

Now she is in her 70s, retired and spends lots of time there. She’s found a whole bunch of places to stay and she knows lots of people. She thinks it’s absolutely brilliant.

I’m not sure if I’ll ever leave this country again to be honest but we’re all different.

I would imagine the safety profile hasn’t changed much, but there’s a lot more publicity about it now.

if it’s your kind of place, then by all means go.

I should probably add, I know one Indian lady who recently visited after 20 years and said it’s horrible ! She was visiting relatives but she said just walking around town was really unpleasant. And everywhere smells of weed. Obviously, London can be like that, but she doesn’t really go into London anymore. I pointed that out to her and said she’d have exactly the same problem here if she did!

Honestly, so much of this depends on what bothers you and what doesn’t. But your age has nothing to do with it. unless it affects your travel insurance premiums a lot?

Yes, sorry. I’m confused now!. I spent a long time there travelling but that’s 30 years ago …4x 6 month trips so two years in total. I pretty much went everywhere except Jammu and Kashmir and some of the north eastern states.

Do you mean about women’s safety? I would certainly be very conscious of that.

I’m definitely more aware of it now than I was then, I feel like I was very ignorant about it last time I went.

Go and enjoy yourself. Make sure to go through a travel agency, so you have driver/guide for the main sights. You will have a good time.
