Padstow - what do we think?

We go to Cornwall every year for a week. For the last 5 years we have been to St Ives. We do go for day trips to other places but we love it so much there that we do spend most of our time actually in St Ives.

We didn’t enjoy Newquay and were not crazy for Penzance but admittedly we only went to the harbour and town. We did enjoy Mousehole and some of the smaller places but they were small and we pretty much walked the entire area in a couple of hours.

What do we think of Padstow? Or am I off to St Ives again next year? 😂

For context, we enjoy food and good walks/ hiking. It’s just us and the dogs.

Padstow is known locally as ‘Padstein’ as most bakeries, eateries, pubs have been taken over by Rick Stein and his overpriced offerings! It gets very busy in high season, limited parking and getting a seat anywhere to eat is painful! I’d stay somewhere else and do a day trip there.

Fowey is my favourite place to stay. St Ives is lovely but too far down if you’ve already had a long drive.

Hate it. It’s overpriced, horribly busy and dreadful

I was going to suggest Fowey or maybe even Tintagel area. Padstow is kind of tedious being Steinland.

This. And I agree with a previous poster who likes Fowey.

We stayed nearby in Harlyn Bay a couple of years ago. I loved the area - there are lots of things/towns to visit nearby. Harlyn beach itself is lovely and flat, easily accessible and clean. Lots pf walking in the area. Padstow itself was an OK place to visit - plenty of quirky shops and such but I do agree its been a bit taken over by the Stein family and it gets very busy.

I will look into Fowey - thanks all. Any recommendations? We tend to stay in an Airbnb (easier with dogs). We do eat out every night and love to sample the cafes/ pubs so all recommendations welcome!

Fowey is lovely. We live 5 miles from there. Lansallos is dog friendly and a great walk from Fowey. There is also a dog-friendly restaurant called 'Fern' which is very cheffy but the most amazing food just outside Bodmin which is worth booking. Goliath Falls is another good dog walk and there's a food van which serves BBQ "Inkies" which is good. Another of our favourite dog friendly restaurants is Yamas in Looe. It serves Greek food and is easily tagged on as part of a walk thorough Looe woods or the SW coastal path.
