48 hours in Copenhagen - what to do and where to eat?

Going for a weekend mid October, 2 adults. Enjoy shopping, strolling, eating and drinking. Don't want a jam packed agenda so only looking to do 2-3 sights but could do with recommendations

Staying in the city centre - restaurant recommendations for dinner would be great, open to any cuisine, mid range rather than fine dining. Thanks!

travoli park and the Copenhagen zoo, both are amazing.

BlakeCarrington · 30/09/2026 18:46

Tivoli Park is the must do imo, you can easily spend the whole day there.

RandomMess · 30/09/2026 18:57

I’m not sure when Tivoli opens ready for Halloween. The harbour is nice as are the botanical gardens.

Do you like wine or beer in particular?

The hotels are very expensive compared to the UK. Food & drink is on a par.

We enjoyed a wander in Nyhavn and Tivoli Gardens. Also Amalienborg palace.

Decorhate · 30/09/2026 19:06

We liked Hyttefadet in Nyhavn. Danish menu and the staff were lovely.

WhereAreWeNow · 30/09/2026 19:08

We did a nice sightseeing boat trip. I'd recommend that.

Christianna district if you like hippy culture (avoid the dealers)
nyhavn and the rest of the waterfront
glypotek gallery
tivoli is tacky unless you really like rides

ImBeeZee · 30/09/2026 19:19

We enjoyed our tourist boat trip (one hour, Stromma) and walking round Nyhavn. Pick one of the palaces/castles and maybe one museum. It’s a place to mooch and unwind. If you like fine dining you’ll be delighted but do book ahead!

My absolute favourite place was Helsingor but it’s 45 mins from Central and probably won’t fit your itinerary (but if it does… castle, beach, maritime museum, fabulous street food hall in an old docklands warehouse - it’s basically a perfect day out).

SwedishEdith · 30/09/2026 19:24

I didn't find Tivoli tacky at all. And the food hall was really reasonable.

Loved this place. Breakfast and dinner were fantastic.

My favourites from my trip a few years ago (it was March, so Tivoli wasn’t open)
Boat trip round the canals
Rosenborg Castle- has the Danish Crown Jewels
The Round Tower - great views over the city
Copenhagen Zoo - they have pandas

We went there! The breakfast was fantastic but they only served the coffees with the croissants after we'd had everything else. We'd rather have had a coffee at the beginning and ordered another one if we'd wanted.

We had some great open sandwiches for lunch in Cafe Oscar on Bredgade. The Design Museum further up from there is well worth a visit and has a cafe with additional tables in the courtyard/quadrangle.

We also ate in a traditional Danish restaurant in Vesterbro one evening.

Rosenberg Castle was really interesting. A canal boat trip is well worth it. Copenhagen is very walkable.

Becs258 · 30/09/2026 21:18

Definitely Tivoli and the zoo. Climb the round tower. Boat trip was good.
This place is a bit of an institution for coffee/ hot chocolate and cake. Expensive, but so worth it!

If you want a nice fine dining type meal this place is good; https://www.marvogben.dk/

We also enjoyed pizza in the Tivoli food court and we had a fancy smørrebrød lunch here https://aamanns.dk/restaurant/aamanns-1921/ (fancier than we expected, DH thought he’d booked their Deli sister place that we’d seen on Travel Man)

We also had pølse from street vendors for lunch a couple of times to keep meal costs down, we were there a week.

In terms of sightseeing we enjoyed the Zoo, Tivoli, Nyhavn, a wander to see the worlds most underwhelming statue, and we were there when the observatory was open so did that, although we weren’t blessed with clear skies.

It’s one of my favourite city breaks we’ve been on, enjoy! The Copenhagen card was good value for us as we had the time to squeeze as much out of it as we could, but I think they do a 2 day one too, depending what you plan to do.

CheeseWisely · 30/09/2026 21:47

Just read the OP again and saw you don’t want fine dining, so ignore my first suggestion! 🫣

The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is easy to get to by train - fabulous setting, interesting collection and the cafe / restaurant has great food. It’s open until late.

Changing the guard at noon at the Amalienborg Palace is fun. Recommend the Design Museum if you’re into Danish design.

We had a great meal at this restaurant:

the danish museum of resistance was an outstanding experience and the danish changing of the guard at the palace not far from Nyhavn is worth it. i would recommend Dina Kafe which is very close to the train station. reasonable value for excellent quality food in a lovely setting. but overall food and drink is eye wateringly expensive even for the simplest of pastries and coffee for breakfast.

SwedishEdith · 30/09/2026 22:15

If you're budget conscious, wine in the supermarkets (7-11) was similar price to the UK. So easy enough to have in your room.

crumpet · 30/09/2026 22:20

I enjoyed wandering around the National Museum which is pretty central, and the cafe there did a good lunch

Lottapianos · 01/10/2026 19:22

Thanks everyone, lots to think about! 👍
