Cyprus in December?

Has anyone been? I know it won't be hot but if we could get reasonable weather for a week with a good hotel, we may consider touring the island with a hire car.

I went in November years ago, and it was sunny but cool. Not sunbathing weather at all....

We go to Cyprus regularly. It's a really lovely place, though you need to check the weather for december - might be wet (I've only been in oct and march-may).

It's dead easy to get around the island in a hire car, and now the border is open, you can drive to the North as well, which is wonderful.

If you base yourself in Limassol, you're well placed to reach other places as it's in the middle of the south coast, so about an hour from Paphos and Larnaca and the mountains, and just over an hour from Nicosia. It'll be pretty quiet as it's out of season, but that also means you won't have any trouble finding hotels.

Are you going with any kids? It's a very child-friendly place if you are - and even better if you're travelling with a bump!

DS will be around 6 months. I just know I will need to get away but don't want to go anywhere too far or too hot as he'll still be little!

According to trip advisor temps should be around 20 but pretty chilly at night. We'd book a pretty good hotel so it would probably be dinner, wine and bed in the hotel anyway.

Cyprus in Dec will be cool but sunny. Early mornings and evenings esp cool. It won't be wet that doesn't start until Jan/Feb. A nice time to come with a small child.

I wouldn't recommend Limmasol, I live just outside and have always thought how disappointed I would be to find myself there on holiday. Paphos is quite nice, Ayia Napa is nice, my favourite places are the Akamas Penisula (Latich and Polis) and Pissouri.

A car is essential if you don't want to stay in the hotel for a week. There is very little public transport and what there is is completely unreliable. I would recommend you bring your child's own car seat with you, the driving is appalling but as long as you drive defensively you'll be fine. (I have been here 3 years and have never had a prang)

If I can be of any more assistance let me know. I can recommend a few nice hotels or villas if you are interested.

McDreamy

Thank you very much for that. I'd be interested to hear about good 5 star hotels may be with a spa. Not really up for a villas as I think it would be just like being at home!

The evenings will probably just be a good dinner and some wine so we'd be happy with that.

Hubby drives for a living so he'd be the one doing the driving but I will mention that to him.

Again, thank you for your help.

The Anassa hotel is supposed to be gorgeous, quite style-y, caters for children well too... will try to find link.

orangina · 30/06/2008 17:15

here we are, as well as it sister hotel the almyra....

orangina · 30/06/2008 17:16

friends of mine went to almyra last year w 2 children (toddler and infant) and used the kids go lightly service (they provide EVERYTHING) and thought it was brilliant (£££ but worth it as far as they were concerned...)

McDreamy - I agree, Limassol isn't the prettiest of places, but it is well situated and easy to escape - also has some decent hotels (Four Seasons - v. expensive but worth it!)
