Short break destination recommendations for me and teen to celebrate finishing her GCSEs

I want to plan a short break away for myself and 16 yo DD for after she’s finished her GCSEs. I suggested Paris, Barcelona or Berlin, but she’s not keen. She’s not really wanting to do a city break or too beach focused. She loves nature and getting out there but I do not drive so will be relying on public transport. Would ideally love not UK based as she’s not been out of the UK since she was little. She’s not very sporty and definitely and alternative/ goth type teen. Really want it to be memorable for her as she’s working hard and is such a good kid and deserves it. Budget isn’t great at about £1000 - £1500

How about the Alps? Lakes, mountains etc and certainly some places with rail access in Switzerland and Austria e.g. Seefeld near Innsbruck.

Whitby is the UK Goth destination but it gets very busy in summer.

Slovenia. Fly to Ljubljana which despite being the capital feels like a small, boho town. Use buses to get around everywhere, they are cheap and connect between the airport, the capital and the lakes... speaking of the lakes, you need to head to Lake Bled (there's a gothic church in the middle!) overlooked by a castle on the cliff; Lake Bohinj is close too and in a wilder, very deep nature spot. The are also caves in the areas - Postojna and Skocjan. Really safe and lovely country to visit with immense amounts of natural beauty, also your money will go further there than in the UK. Wherever you go, I hope you enjoy it!

I think the budget is the sticking point here. I’d start by looking at skyscanner for flight options and going from there. You’ll want to keep flights as cheap as possible as that could easily take up half or more of your budget.

The Netherlands has great public transport and this place is a gorgeous national park - you can get there on the bus and there are free-to-use bikes to get around and being NL, it's all flat! https://hogeveluwe.nl/

ETA: you can change the language on the website to English. :-)

Dolomites. we did it with no car. Hotel was outside a village with a train station and there was a bus stop outside the hotel. Visitor travel was free within South Tyrol. Was beautiful.

@TheDramaLlama123
Fly to Salzburg.
Bus outside the airport to Zell am See.
Book accomodation that includes the summer card.
Free cable car use, lido, glacier, visit to hydro electric damp, gorge walk, bus travel.
My teen DDs absolutely loved it
If you can squeeze in a couple of nights on Salzburg too, it's a lovely small city.

Ljubljana/ Bled, Salzburg/any nearby resort (budget might be an issue), Memmingen->Kempten/Allgäu might be cheaper, cycling in the Netherlands, Krakow/mountains/salt mines. AI might work quite well here so perhaps try asking ChatGPT.

It may well not suit your DD from what you have said but I did do Barcelona post GCSEs with my DD and it was perfect. Low key sightseeing (Parc Guell, the Gaudi house, outside of Sagrada Familia), lots of walking, some
time on the beach, a bit of shopping and delicious food wherever we went. Flights were relatively cheap, accom was expensive but, once we were there, we were pleasantly surprised at the prices of everything else (we do live in the SE which sometimes skews what seems “reasonable”).
Salzburg or the Alps sound perfect for your DD. Perhaps Annecy or Lake Garda might be an option too.
