Going to Amsterdam for a few days. Want to go to Van Gogh and Rijksmuseum etc. Do I need a city card?

We went in the summer. I decided not to get the city card as it was quite expensive for all of us. Each museum is about €20 per person, so it adds up. We went to only 2 museums (including Anne Frank, which isn’t included in card, I believe) so it was more economical to just buy tickets. Having it does allow for more spontaneous museum visits / , but we had planned it our trip pretty specifically. We found travelling around very very easy, using tram/bus/metro - just tap on tap off. Transport is fantastic - frequent and clean.
So it depends on what sort of trip you have planned, and what you want to do.

I agree that it really depends on how much it costs and how many of the included museums etc you're planning on going to. Sometimes it's worth it for a family because of free or low cost add on DC, but not one or two adults as is disproportionately more expensive. Plus quite often, as @dabdab points out, there's often a key site that's not included.

If it looks borderline, you could buy it for part of your trip and visit the museums on that/those days - unless they're massive and/or far apart, I'd have thought you could visit one in the morning and one in the afternoon on the same day if you organise yourselves. Any public transport on days you don't have the card is likely to be fairly cheap, because it usually is in most countries that do it better than the UK.

In short, it depends on party size and how many paid places you're planning to visit.

You can get a travel card that lets you use buses and trams which works out cheap for transport. Don’t bother with a city card unless your planning* to visit loads of museums.
youll need to pre book the vangouch museum but the other one you and book on the day.
their is also a banks museum in that area too.
if you go behind the train station there are free ferry’s to IAmsterdam and another one that takes you along the river to a huge graffiti museum.
