How do couples handle holiday budgets when one partner earns more?

DP and I earn different salaries. I take home around £8k a month and he takes home about £5k a month. We’re not married but live together.

He doesn’t like spending on holidays. He’s happy to spend £1,000 each on a week in Lanzarote in December. I did those hols growing up so I would prefer to spend £2,000 each on a week in Mexico.

If I offer to pay more he gets annoyed and says he can pay for himself. Then he complains that the holidays I want to go on are too expensive. So I say fine, I’ll pay the difference? But he won’t let me. What do you do in this circumstance?

I organise, book and pay for holidays. We jointly discuss where we want to go. Often starting with me saying " ooh look we can go to xyz for peanuts' and DH saying yes or no. Then the kids saying yes or no. If we all say yes, I make it happen.

We work on a very different budget though. Your monthly income is what DH earns in 9m. He wouldn't ever suggest spending money on holidays.

With all that money and it sounds like you're child free, surely you're not only going on holiday once a year?

So have multiple holidays each year with a mix of shared ones that suit both of you as well as separately, or he can stay at home while you go away some of the time.
