December city break

Looking for a 2 night city break early December for me and my husband (in 30s).
We've done Budapest and Barcelona before and enjoyed both.
Were thinking either Prague, Strasbourg or Berlin? Any reviews on these places? Trying to decide where to go is tricky!
We are looking for Christmassy vibe, markets, lots of shops, bars, restaurants etc and other things to do in the day...

Bruges is beautiful at that time of year. There is a small Christmas market but the whole city is decorated.

if you want some sun, Seville is usually warm still and they have a fun evening when the Christmas lights are switched on.

Agreed! Bruges and Seville both great in their own ways, loved Prague too.

I loved Munich. Plenty to do and see, lots of museums and art galleries and Christmas markets.

What about Vienna.
Admittedly when DH and I went it was February but there was still an ice rink and lots of stalls.
And it is a beautiful city

Alicante or Malaga would be more good choices for Christmas lights, historical sights and a bit of warmth too.

It’s a great place at Christmas.

I loved the nativity scenes in gardens that backed onto the canal in Bruges. You can take a horse drawn carriage that takes you past them.

If you are in the SE I’d take the Eurostar to Brussels - including check you can be in the city centre in under 4 hours from London

Lots of impressive Christmas stuff and it is so much easier to get there, saves faffing on flights and means you don’t waste time and money on airport transit.

Plus HUGE benefit is you know you aren’t zapping as much CO2 into the atmosphere.

Berlin, Vienna and Prague can be very cold. We went to Berlin early December and it was freezing during the day. Prague wasn't a lot warmer.

it's a great city and has good markets. Very crowded but that's in each city.

oustedbymymate · 16/09/2026 06:46

Do you want warm?

we did Berlin in Feb for DH birthday and it was brilliant. We had such a good time. Lovely clean and tidy and so easy to get around but it is big.

we’ve also done Oslo at that time of year which was also really nice. Along with Reykjavik at new year which was amazing. One of my favourite. Cologne also really nice.

we’ve done a few city breaks at the time of year

Wow, thanks for everyone's replies! Really appreciate it! I feel im even more torn for ideas now as you've all given so many! Haha
Not looking for warmth. Just looking for a romantic getaway, Christmassy vibes, good food and good shops and other things to do. It's 2 nights off from parenting so we want to make it worthwhile haha!
