Has anyone ever asked and got a hotel upgrade?

We’re all ff for the weekend in a couple of weeks. There are a few fabulous looking swim up rooms etc but they were out of budget and as it’s only a weekend I happily booked a normal double room. I’m wondering if I get there, could I simply ask if there was a chance of an upgrade if the hotel wasn’t full. Anyone ever successfully been upgraded? It isn’t a special occasion. Any tips? TOTALLY fine if we don’t get one, I didn’t pay for it, just wondering if like flying there’s always a chance??? Never asked before, never been upgraded either so just a cheeky question.

I did when found an amt infestation in my room

Yes once. My room had a wasps nest on the balcony, so I politely asked to be moved rooms. They upgraded me to a 1-bed sea-front suite!
I’ve booked to go back next year to that suite (paying full) since it was so nice.

I’ve emailed once asking for a pool view room and we were charged for it when we arrived. We poss could’ve took our chances as a decent proportion of rooms are pool view but they seen this as an upgrade. I’ve also asked for one of the swim up rooms at a resort I was going to and was given the price. I think you’ll be charged if you’re asking them for it. The swim up pool was prohibitively expensive for us and we had a decent amount of spends.

Booked in Turkey a 3 bed apartment and my mum had a 1 bed apartment, arrived to check in and was told they wasn't available and told us they have upgraded us to a 4 bedroom 3 storey private villa with our own swimming pool and free taxis to and from villa to hotel as it was slightly away from the main hotel. Was the best holiday ever !
