Where to stay in Malta

We’ve booked a trip to Malta in Oct. My kids are in their 20s so ideal for 4 adults. Not too fussed about beaches, although one beach day will be nice. Going for 6 days. Not fussed about shopping but happy to sightsee.

I’d stay in Valletta, there are some nice hotels and it gives you plenty of options for food and drink. There are plenty of places to visit outside of Valletta and the bus service is good. Easy to go up the coast if you fancy a beach day or to visit different parts of the island.

St Julian's area. We loved it there. Not touristy.

We visit Malta fairly frequently although feel like St Julian’s has gone really downhill lately, far too dirty and has become a bit hardcore in the main strip. Scruffy, dirty, rubbish shops and drunk young people / drug dealers on the corners. A shame.
Valletta is beautiful as always.

I'm talking about St Julian's Balluta area. If you want sleaze go to St George's Bay Area - horrific.

I stayed in Sliema, it was lovely.

Sliema is nice - especially the hotels on the promenade.
Its only a short ferry ride away from Valetta.

We stayed in St Paul's Bay last year but def prefer Sliema

The buses in Malta were very easy to use - fare is EUR 2.50 to go anywhere on the main island for any journey up to 2 hours. We stayed in Valletta and went to Mdina for the day - it only took 40 mins to get there.

Airport is only 15 mins from Valletta.

We stayed in Birgu, one of the three cities just over the water from Valletta. It was beautiful. Easy to get the little ferry to Valletta and lots of buses to get to other places on the island.

Sliema but DONT take the boat across to Valletta unless you have the fitness and agility of a mountain goat!
We stayed in the AX Victoria but if we go again I’d stay down by the water.
Do visit Mdina, it’s lovely, it’s a half hour or so bus ride.

We stayed in Rabat and it was lovely as were a 5 minute walk from the old city (Mdina) so could explore that on foot over a couple of days. Took the bus to Valletta which was very easy. Did an organised Taxi to and from airport. But Rabat also has some interesting bits. It was very laid back and some nice restaurants
