Is China or Japan too hot and humid for a July holiday?

Thinking about going to China or Japan but can only go for an extended time next July due to school holidays and working around exams.

Is the heat/humidity really that bad?. Is July a complete No?
We're used to going to Thailand so can cope with 35+c

Loads of places in Kyoto are air conditioned. Museums, restaurants, tea houses, shops, rest stops and cafes. Off the top of my head Nijo castle, Byodoin and Kinkakuji all have rest stops and/or museums on site. All are part of the list that make up that Kyoto world heritage site. Kyoto has lots of museums and galleries too.

The OP has already explained that she can’t go months earlier or later.

Agree with @Takonekoand if you intersperse with stops/ rest places/ cafes, it’s doable in my opinion. OP has said she can only travel in June and July and may not even visit Kyoto.

We go to Japan annually to see DH family. We had to go in late July last year for various reasons and I said NEVER AGAIN to my DH. It was sweltering, we were all grumpier than usual and it was just a faff getting from point A with aircon to point B with aircon. Luckily we weren't really there for sightseeing but that would have been tough. As a PP said, China meanwhile is so vast July could offer a range of temperatures depending on the region.

Spring and autumn are the best times to visit Japan because in summer it is very hot with high humidity. It's the humidity which is the killer because high humidity means you can't sweat as well to cool yourself down.

If you're in the south think back to our 1st heatwave this summer. It reached about 37 degrees but that was made unbearable because we also had high humidity which is unusual for the UK.

I personally wouldn't choose to visit in summer.

@Additup I'm in Scotland so no heatwave here. We were in Paris in July though and did Disney and all the sites where it got up to 41c and no aircon where we stayed so we are used to doing things in the heat.
Would prefer Easter or Oct but not possible due to child exams and needing to study and would only be for 2 weeks.
If we're spending the money and time from Scotland getting there, we want to go for minimum of 3 weeks.

I’d say go for it if that’s the only time you can go. You sound like you cope quite well in the heat and having longer than two weeks allows you to see places outside of the golden route. My favourite experiences in Japan have been in places off the typical tourist trail.

Places in the mountains can be 5-10 degrees cooler than Tokyo. Take a look at Nagano prefecture. Kamikochi looks magical and is only accessible from late spring to autumn. https://www.japan.travel/en/destinations/hokuriku-shinetsu/nagano/

It’s also summer festival season. Things like the Ise dedication fireworks festival, the Aomori Nebuta festival and Gion matsuri can only be experienced in summer.

Qingdao in China is beautiful in China in July. Beaches, history, aquarium, zoo, shopping. Most chinese people will go there in July. Still hot but 30. Dont go towards the south and avoid Shanghai (typhoon season)

also most Chinese hotels and attractions have aircon
