Van Gogh or Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam?

Which one do you recommend? We will only do one. For what it's worth, which one houses the self painting of Van Gogh?

(As well as the above, we'll go to Anne Frank Museum, a canal cruise, cat museum, generally amble around central Amsterdam - includinging The 9 Streets and Red Light District - anything else anyone would recommend?)

I adored the Van Gogh. I could have spent at least half a day there if our ticket hadn’t been late in the afternoon.

and try to find 10 mins to go to Tony Chocoloney. It’s not a museum or tourist attraction as such, but interesting to visit and a huge range of ‘must try’ varieties.

I loved both but The Rijksmuseum for me. The Rijksmuseum does have a Van Gogh self portrait but it also has Rembrandt and Vermeer - out of this world!

The Van Gogh has lots of self portraits, sunflowers, the bedroom painting, almond blossom and many others

I also loved the Stedelijk - we saw the Marina Abramovich exhibition last year which was amazing.

STRAAT is good too and the trip on the free ferry to get there is fun.

The Mauritshuis is my favourite (but Girl with a Pearl Earring is on loan atm).

If I had to choose, I'd probably go Rijksmuseum, but I'd also check which exhibitions are on first, as that could swing me one way or another. I did enjoy the Stedelijk, too.

we found out too late that the Anne frank museum had to be booked about 6 weeks in advance.

agree about Tony chocoloney’s - you can make your own personalised bars, which was fun.

we liked the food market & fresh stroopwaffels.
