Some unexpected time off has come our way . End of October beginning of November.
we have been to Australia before and loved it visited Sydney, Cairns, Port Douglas and Perth
thinking of 3-4 weeks visiting Melbourne Tasmania and Brisbane. We like scenery culture nice food non drinkers so no wine or wild nights out happy to drive.
is this a good itinerary?
I won’t bore you with details but a rough idea would be good.

I love love Tasmania!!!! Beautiful, perfect time of year. Stunning scenery and wildlife. I would potentially fly into Melbourne, do bits around there and countryside Victoria. Fly Melbourne to Hobart. Stay a good ten days in Tas to really soak it up. Then end up in Brisbane

We went that time of year years ago. Tasmania was beautiful, we stayed near wineglass bay and a couple of nights in Hobart but wish I’d made it up to the north of the island too.

if it’s scenery, I’d put in a couple of days to do the Great Ocean Road.

I think that's a really good itinerary with lots of contrasts. Where in Tassie are you thinking?

I like Melbourne and used to live there but I was a little disappointed last time I was there, it felt a bit tired. But it was a grey few days in August!

I think Brisbane is actually really underrated and often overlooked - really good food culture, beautiful green city and easy to get to either the Sunshine or Gold Coasts and the hinterland.

For a really different landscape think about going up to somewhere like Lamington National Park - gorgeous scenery and lovely walks etc. We went to O'Reilly's last time we were there and it was really lovely.

If you've not visited before, Uluru?

Presumably the Great Ocean Road.

You might enjoy the Mount Hay resort just outside Berry.

It'll be a fabulous trip.

sparrownetsuke · 04/09/2026 07:43

Uluru is nowhere near Brisbane or Melbourne let alone Tasmania

It sounds good to me especially if you include the Great Ocean Road. Brisbane can be overlooked but it's a lot more interesting these days.

SourCabbage · 04/09/2026 07:45

You could visit Wilson's Prom National Park if you're in the Melbourne area.

Don't discount looking around the wine areas. I did Margaret river area as a non drinker and it was still beautiful. Your destinations seem reasonable for the time available.

Thankyou that’s great information. I just need to study the times etc a bit more closely but a plan is emerging!!!

Uluṟu is 3000km from any of the destinations OP has mentioned.
It’s like suggesting someone throws in a visit to Moscow while visiting the Uk or maybe a weekend visit to the Pyramids while on holiday in France.

For Tassie, I would fly into Launceston and drive to Hobart down the east coast. Then fly out of Hobart. You can take a trip to see penguins north of Launceston.
You should not missing stopping a night or two on Maria Island. You have to book the boat in advance though.
There are so many lovely places in Tassie. I could spend the whole trip duration in Tassie (I've done 4 weeks there twice), so I am a bit biased.

I worked at the airport in Alice springs for a while. You'd be surprised how many people come to Australia for 2 weeks and visit ALL the states. They must spend all their time in airports.
Way too many people also flew to Alice expecting to see Uluru.

From recent trip ….

Melbourne I’d hire a car and go to Philip Island to see the ( wild) Little Penguin colony. Enchanting. You sit quietly at edge beach and wait for the wee things to come out of sea at dusk in groups of four or five and waddle back to their burrows in the rocks. Of course you may see them in St Kilda in Melbourne itself but Philip Island is well worth a visit - numbers limited, so book.

Botanic Gardens and war memorial Melbourne worth a visit. Felt quite a British city. Safe and buzzing with free central transport. Maybe vineyard tour - no shortage of options.

Brisbane - go up sky deck - fab views. Nice walk along river and past university. Car hire and go to the Irwin’s Australia Zoo. Maybe visit Botany Bay or magnificently boogie pretty Noosa Bay depending on which direction weather is better.

May also be worth trying to go to an Aussie rules football game. Great fun.

sparrownetsuke · 05/09/2026 00:00

Botany Bay is Sydney not Brisbane. Did you mean Moreton Bay?
