Taking 2 kids out of school for a holiday in 3 weeks time. Bad I know, but dh work shifts and this is the easiest cheapest way to squeeze one in. Booked for mon-fri. Ideally we would leave early on Mon to make the most of travelling down. I will put in a form for unauthorised absence I think, but is there a better way to avoid fine pls.

Your best just accepting the fact that you will probably get a fine rather than stressing around trying to play the system.

enjoy the holiday and deal with any fine when your back.

You’re going to have to take your chances
school won’t authorise the absence and it is up to the LA if they impose a fine (which is per parent)

Arbourimage · 02/09/2026 08:34

You’re taking them out for a week holiday, you can’t avoid the fines.

EtoileLune · 02/09/2026 08:36

How do you propose avoiding the fine? At my dc school and the schools my frienda work at they authorise ZERO absences regardless of reason so no way to "cheat" the system. Just tell school- kids will be absent these days they will report you to LA and you either will or wont get a fine

Floppyearedlab · 02/09/2026 08:36

Just don’t go.
Nobody HAS to take a holiday. Wait until shifts align with the holidays or do weekend breaks

Keepitrealnomists · 02/09/2026 08:39

Depends on your school and LA, I have previously taken my kids out for 4 days max, in my area your reported and fined for 5 days. Ive never been fined. 5 days, you will need to accept the fine.

If we go after school on the Monday we wont get fined though right?

Just accept the fine. You’re saving money so you say anyway by missing a week of school at the start of the year.

Bitzee · 02/09/2026 08:48

If they only miss 4 days of school so Tuesday-Friday because you’ve left Monday evening you might get away without the fine. Ask the school. And be honest. Don’t pressure a 6YO and an 8YO to lie. Even if you do get fined presumably it’s a lot less than the holiday would have cost in August so it’s just something to factor in to your budget.
