River Cruise in Sep/Oct

Has anyone done a Europe river cruise in September or October? Looking at booking one as a gift for my parents 70th next year but worried it will be too cold/wet. The other option is May but I’ve heard sometimes the water level isn’t high enough to actually cruise & ppl get bussed around instead.
Considering either a Danube or Rhine cruise.

If you go on the cruise critic website there is a whole sub forum dedicated to River cruises, you can also filter by company to get more specific info or ask questions, I have no experience of river cruises myself, only Ocean cruises, but I would focus less on the weather ( you can easily look up averages for time of year for the region you are interested in) but more water level snd how the company deals with this issue if and when it arises.
Youtube is another great resource to get a feel for various companies and itineraries.
