Has this summer's weather changed your plans for next summer's holiday?

Has this summers weather made you wonder what to do for a holiday next summer? I'm quite confused / a bit stuck! Presumably changing climate could really change holiday making, as traditional British holiday destinations like Greece, Spain and even France could be far too hot plus there is the fire risk. We've never been to Greece or Turkey and were wondering about going there, we'd love to try snorkeling in warm clear sea. So now wondering whether we need to go at Easter or rethink the destination. Maybe Scandinavia will have a boom?! Although it's very expensive sounding.

Greece (depending on where you go) is lovely in May half term, perfect weather for sunbathing and sightseeing and not so crowded. We always avoid the Med during the summer (except last year when we went to south of France but fortunately we avoided very hot weather). This year we went to Austria - the weather in the mountains is quite changeable but all the greenness is lovely to see. Some very warm days (29/30), some cooler pleasant days and some rainy days. We would go to Austria again!

Yeah I think we will just end up doing the hotter bits in may and eventually maybe April or October if this heat carries on. For the summer I dont feel the need to be away if the weather is like this, so just booking UK caravan parks with pools and the sea :)

Yes. My DS has his final A Level exams next May/June. So we cant go away any earlier than 18th June. Wanted to book a holiday to Rhodes. Now having second thoughts about it, incase there is a heat wave.

@TheLette we went to Austria this year too, it was fab! Maybe the mountains will get a boom as people go up in altitude. It was still 30 and very sweaty though, especially for hiking!

No because if I book a uk holiday it will rain next summer 🤣

Apparently El Ninio means next summer may be even hotter. I am sorely tempted to move to Scotland for the summer. I save the Med for October/November.

We only ever camp these days as we can’t afford anything else now our eldest is at school

Never. You can't beat the med. Did a UK holiday in August south coast and still found the water colder and evenings chiller than tbe gorgeous med. 😍 I love hot weather. Aside from a few days of 35c the heat in the home counties where I live was pleasant. Not unbearable at all. We will go somewhere in the med again next year and I'm going in two weeks to catch up with some more hot weather before the dreaded cold and damp comes in.

I think we will end up going in June or maybe shift our main holiday to Easter time. In Scotland so don’t have to worry about fines etc, our school just says ‘Have a nice time’. We usually go first week of July.

Yes, we were in Cornwall this summer and the weather was glorious. Plus we are Londoners so have had our fill.

I would still do France but save Greece & Spain for May

It's a bit difficult to know when will be safe - in France the heatwave started about May didn't it?

Actually due to go to southern France next week and am watching the weather forecast nervously - at the moment it's in the "hot but manageable" range but it wouldn't take much for it to go into the uncomfortable.

Last year at the same time was 25-27 which would have been perfect!

Yes and no.

Yes, Sorrento and a visit to Pompeii is on my list, but I'm waiting til 2028 when Easter is later into April and go then. We went to Athens in Feb one year (it even snowed!) and it was brilliant that it was cool enough to walk and walk without suffering in the heat. I won't go to Italy in the summer due to the heat.

But also no...
There's a total eclipse next year in August in Southern Spain, so we are braving the heat there to have a stay in Marbella which is in the path of totality. A lot of other people want to go to Egypt for the longer eclipse period, but that's a step too far for us.

We also went to Austria this summer and though the nights cooled off nicely in the mountains it was definitely warmer than I expected during the day. In hindsight I might have planned a bit differently but was still fun overall.

We had a positive experience in Greece last October half term although I know the weather can really start to change then so maybe we were just lucky. But trying southern Italy this October.

It's impossible to be certain. However, I recommend not choosing France if you hate the heat. It has really borne the brunt of some of the recent heatwaves. I go every year (never to the South) and about the past four summers have had unbearably hot days at least some of the time. Last year and this year there were multiple days over 38 degrees. Even traditionally cooler places like Brittany and Normandy were incredibly hot.

It's hard to know though as there is so much climate uncertainty. Norway had a terrible wet summer apparently.

When I think back to holidays while DC were children we used to go to Greece or Spain in August. I would never do that now. We go in may and September.

It's UK holidays that I might change. I usually do several short breaks coast or countryside, never longer than three days because - weather.
We had a few days in Scarborough which I know well. I've been going all my life but I don't think in 67 years I've ever had glorious sunshine for more than half a day. It was great. If I could guarantee that I would happily holiday in the UK for longer.

We're currently holidaying in Namibia, it's winter being the southern hemisphere, so it's supposed to be mid 20s but it's low/mid 30s, very very hot! I did know before we left that it was warmer than 'normal', but not much you can do about it once you are about to depart and I don't think I would have changed my plans anyway.

We had some really unbearable nights in a lovely gite in August about 10 years ago in the Dordogne. The days were 36 degrees ish and didn't cool down that much during the night. We were in an attic room and it was just awful. There was no air conditioning and that was the first time I ever thought to myself that air conditioning would be an essential for me now going away during school summer holidays anywhere where there is even the remote possibility of very high temperatures, even if only for a few days.

I just need the option to put the air con on for a while to be able to get to sleep at night. During the day you can lie in the shade, take a dip in the pool or sea or lake, drive to somewhere breezier or cooler or with lots of trees for shade, eat ice lollies etc.

But when you're just stuck in a very hot bedroom overnight it's really very nasty without air conditioning once it remains late 20s all night. There is just no respite.

My friend was away in a caravan without aircon (as most of them are) in England during the heatwave - said it was like being in an oven.

Lake Garda was lovely at the end of July - mid to high 20s, not too humid. The mountains were even cooler. When we came home though I noticed they were having another heatwave so I'm glad we went when we did. I just think you could get unusual weather anywhere these days.

Yes, we are thinking that we will go north and have a nice escape from the heat. At least Scotland, maybe Iceland?
