We would like to take our youngest child (aged 18.5 by then)to Italy next June. We did the Amlafi coast before we carried and dd likes lakes so I was thinking Lake Como? We'd like a hotel with b&b...
or villa possibly.
The nice hotels seem to be £££ pp 😕
Not averse to booking flights etc separately
Thanks!

I love the Italian lakes although I haven’t been to Como. My favourite is Lake Maggiore but Garda has lots to offer and is closer to Venice on the train. What kind of activities are you looking for?

LoudSnoringDog · 06/08/2026 06:51

Garda will have lots of reasonable options

Ideally just relaxing and boar rides:)
Also not too long a transfer from the airport

Is your daughter's age a typo, as it seems strange to mention the .5 for an 18 year old.

Badvocthebad · 06/08/2026 18:19

No. She'll be 18 and a half 🤷‍♀️

Boat rides! Not boar rides. That would be stressful 😫

Lake Como has a ferry that potters from landing to landing down the lake. Each landing has restaurants/cafes etc. Bellagio is a lovely village.

You can also easily get the train into Milan for a day trip.

We were in Lake Garda this June. Recommend! Sirmione IS lovely but gets absolutely jam-packed with day trippers, though apparently when they (we!) disappear on the late ferries it’s much quieter. The castle and ruins are interesting for a visit, and Jamaica ‘beach’ is fun too. We stayed in Bardolino over the water, which has a nice promenade and old town, and a pretty decent ferry schedule, though Garda is more mainline as a stop-off and also closer to the theme parks if that’s your thing.
We flew to/from Verona which is about 25 mins away (from Bardolino at least) and so totally doable for a day trip as well.

Or Maggiore. Less busy that Garda.

We were in Lake Garda this summer and Sirmione is lovely, but v busy and also quite small…
We flew into Milan and had a couple of days there, and then took the train to Desenzano del Garda, which took about 90 mins (though there were faster, dearer trains). From there we had day trips to Sirmione and Verona, which was beautiful. Think Pescheria del Garda is better placed for theme parks though. But a great area

Thank you!

Como, Maggiore and Orta are all lovely. They’re easy to get to from Milan, and days out to various places are easy too, such as Milan, Bergamo, Turin and into Switzerland too.
