Is buying and siting a caravan worth it for family holidays?

We are a family of 5 and like many finding the cost of holidays a lot. A decent holiday in school holidays is coming in at at least 5k.

we also enjoy camping breaks and go a couple of times a year- we would probably go more but the effort of packing up the car and setting up etc is a little off putting.

we are considering a caravan as an investment and siting it.

we think it will be around £15k for the caravan and have been quoted 3.5k for site costs, we’d also need to look at storage costs over the winter period.

obviously this is a significant cost and would mean we would go without abroad holidays for several years at least.

would anyone recommend or have advise on if it is worth it? Or any other costs we’d have to consider?

thanks 🙏

If you’re planning to site then static is definitely worth looking into.

Caravans are great if you plan to go to different places and there’s usually really good storage places. We have lots of local farmers that store caravans yearly and you just collect and take them out when you need them.

Statics can be good to hire out too but then you can leave stuff there which may not work for you as you’d still need to pack as such!

But I would say of finances allow - go for it. I have loads of childhood memories from camping that are priceless

We have a static caravan about 2 hours from where we live
I go most weekends I finish at lunch on a Friday then come home Sunday evening
I love going by myself as well as spending time there with Dh,Dd and the dog
Dh works away a lot and travels all over the world so he loves going just to reset and chill out
My dd is 21 and she goes during the holidays ( she’s at uni ) either with her boyfriend, friends or by herself
Its been worth every penny and it’s right near the beach and there’s plenty to do in the area

We kept ours on a site in storage which meant we didn’t have to tow it each time but it cost less than siting it. We loved our caravan. We had some great memories.
