New Year European Break

Looking at doing a European Break over New Year - not necessarily for NYE fireworks etc, but just to have a break away. It will be 4 whole days so where would you recommend ?

We did Venice from 2nd January for four nights. We had a brilliant time as way less tourists than in the warmer months.

Have done a few of these. Seville was my fave. T shirt weather in the daytime. Amazing city.

Amsterdam between Christmas and New Year was lovely.

We’ve done Bruges and Marbella. This year we’re going to Prague

We went to Malaga between xmas and new year. Was up to 21 degrees and sunny. Fab christmas lights/music.

Following with interest - we've only ever done Blackpool at NY! 🤣

That's good to know @Treylime. We're flying to Malaga on Boxing Day for a week.

Copenhagen is lovely.

We've done Rome, Budapest, Madrid, Gdansk, Vienna at that of year. We normally go roughly 27th December and come back NYE, this is often cheapest in terms of flights. If you are wanting to go sightseeing it would be wise to check what's going to be open museum/attraction wise on New Years Eve and New Years Day. In Madrid places like the Prado were open only until 1 or 2pm on New Years Eve and shut all day on New Year Day. In Germany, most sites like Neuschwanstein castle were shut all day Dec 31st and Jan 1st. We did Bavaria in May in the end, as 2 days with everything shut just doesn't work. Vienna was good, we left on evening of Dec 30th but I recall pretty much everything was going to be open, even on New Year's Day, and I think Amsterdam is similar with things being open. That time of year cities are often quite busy and in some places we've had to pre-book many attractions, particularly in Vienna we had to book at least 3 days in advance for the upper Belvedere and Schonbrunn or you can't get in.

If you're not set on being away on NYE, Spain around 5/6 January is fabulous - the Three Kings Parade in the evening of the 5th, then 6th January is a public holiday, so you'd either need to be in a hotel, book a restaurant or plan to cook in your accommodation and have all your supplies in advance as most shops are closed.

Where in Spain depends on what you like, but Malaga, Seville, Granada, Canaries, Alicante or another coastal area like Nerja or Estepona would all be great.

Vienna, Venice or Amsterdam.

We went to Bologna in very early January this year. It was wonderful. It snowed which was magical. The food and wine as amazing. We did day trips to Padua and Florence by train. If it's bad the weather the city is cloistered and the covered walkways shelter you all over the centre of the city. We loved it.
